If you have a git repo, 'git am foo.patch' will apply the patch in the
file and create a new commit using the extra metadata for commit message
etc (can also handle multiple patches in the same mailbox file).

'git apply foo.patch' will just apply the changes to local sources. This
works even if the current directory is not a git repository.
