Ever heard of VoIP? In such applications it is essential to have as little latency as possible. Do the maths and you will see that you need a codec frame size between 10 and 30ms to get a decent experience. At 8KHz that's just a couple 100 samples. Albeu PS: I don't dispute the fact that putting such codec in nut doesn't make much sense, just that these codec are not useless shit as you seems to imply.
