I don't have any trouble compiling mplayer with xvid 1.0 beta 2. Are you sure all previous versions of xvid have been completely removed, and the new version properly installed? Also, to be sure, run a make distclean in the mplayer source tree before compiling again. -Corey ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2003 22:15:11 -0600 From: bjackowski@milwpc.com Subject: [MPlayer-users] Autoreply: MPlayer-users Digest, Vol 12, Issue 72 To: mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu Message-ID: <B0065146576@mail.milwaukeepc.com> Error: There is no user with this email address Your message reads: Received: from mx.milwaukeepc.com (unverified [207.250.248.12]) by milwpc.com (Rockliffe SMTPRA 5.3.6) with ESMTP id <B0065146573@mail.milwaukeepc.com> for <bjackowski@milwpc.com>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 22:15:10 -0600 Received: from mail.mplayerhq.hu (mail.mplayerhq.hu [192.190.173.45]) by mx.milwaukeepc.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id EE1D3421F8B for <bjackowski@milwpc.com>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 22:15:36 -0600 (CST) Received: from mail.mplayerhq.hu (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.mplayerhq.hu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09F341C260; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 05:14:36 +0100 (CET) From: mplayer-users-request@mplayerhq.hu Subject: MPlayer-users Digest, Vol 12, Issue 72 To: mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu Reply-To: mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-BeenThere: mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.3 Precedence: list List-Id: MPlayer user's list. <mplayer-users.mplayerhq.hu> List-Unsubscribe: <http://mplayerhq.hu/mailman/listinfo/mplayer-users>, <mailto:mplayer-users-request@mplayerhq.hu?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: </pipermail> List-Post: <mailto:mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu> List-Help: <mailto:mplayer-users-request@mplayerhq.hu?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://mplayerhq.hu/mailman/listinfo/mplayer-users>, <mailto:mplayer-users-request@mplayerhq.hu?subject=subscribe> Sender: mplayer-users-bounces@mplayerhq.hu Errors-To: mplayer-users-bounces@mplayerhq.hu Message-Id: <20031218041436.09F341C260@mail.mplayerhq.hu> Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 05:14:36 +0100 (CET) Send MPlayer-users mailing list submissions to mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mplayerhq.hu/mailman/listinfo/mplayer-users or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to mplayer-users-request@mplayerhq.hu You can reach the person managing the list at mplayer-users-owner@mplayerhq.hu When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of MPlayer-users digest..." This evening I opened an avi movie file with mplayer in a console shell (don't ask me which framebuffer is active in that case - SuSE-8.2) and a/v is no more out of sync in that case (image was about 2 seconds delayed in KDE). Thus I reincode now the DVD and I should be able to read my avi file outside of KDE. Now, what could have happened. Is there a parameter I can add in mencoder or mplayer to avoid that (DVD ripping -> DivX encoding)? While "mencoding" I can read the following output: ... [Automatic answer: RTFM (read DOCS, FAQ), also read DOCS/bugreports.html] Hi!
I would like to convert wmv file to uncompressed avi so that i could use real producer and encode it to real.
I tried all sorts of oprions and i get avi out of wmv but then producer says "Error: Unable to set up encode. Your input source may contain an unsupported color format"
I've read the documentation of real producer and it says that the input file format should be [for linux]
Uncompressed AVI or Uncompressed MOV and that it should be RGB 24 or YUV12 [I420].
i tried: mencoder movie.wmv -o out.avi -ovc rawrgb -oac pcm -vop format=rgb24 mencoder movie.asf -o out.avi -ovc rawrgb -oac pcm -vop scale=264:216 format=rgb24
mencoder film.asf -ovc rawyuv -oac pcm [rawyuv should put it to YUV12 ??] same error.
So what am i doing wrong ? How should i produce uncompressed avi that producer will accept?
To say anything certain we need a proper bug report (FULL mencoder output), but first thing I would suggest trying is adding -vf scale to the command line. Actually, I partially retract that. It seems that some options work, but I had never tried them before. Anyway, the above is true when I try $ ./test-play -vf tfields ../movie.avi

Yes, for some nonsensical reason it's back to -vop in g2... ;) Rich ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2003 15:56:06 -0500 From: D Richard Felker III <dalias@aerifal.cx> Subject: Re: [MPlayer-users] Replacing audio stream in avi file To: "MPlayer user's list." <mplayer-users@mplayerhq.hu> Message-ID: <20031217205606.GC20210@brightrain.aerifal.cx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii On Wed, Dec 17, 2003 at 10:55:29AM -0200, romildo@uber.com.br wrote:
[Automatic answer: RTFM (read DOCS, FAQ), also read DOCS/bugreports.html] Hello.
I have the same movie in two different file formats:
1) avi, with an English audio stream, and a very good quality video stream
2) ogm, with a Brazilian Portuguese audio stream, but with a not so good video stream.
I want to replace the audio stream in the avi with the one in the ogm file, recoded to mp2 (later I will convert to SVCD). For that purpose I have extracted the ogg audio stream from the ogm file:
$ ogmdemux -a 1 -nv -nt panteras.detonando.ogm
Then I have decoded the ogg audio stream:
$ oggdec panteras.detonando.ogm-a1.ogg
Then I have encoded it to MP2:
$ toolame -b 224 panteras.detonando.ogm-a1.wav
Now I want to replace the audio stream in the avi with this one. What is the command for that using mencoder?
You don't use mencoder for this. Just use ogmtools to merge the two files (the original avi and ogm), and tell it which streams to keep. Actually what you described is roughly possible, too, although there's MUCH more danger of A/V desync when you split audio and video and put them back together later like this. Hi,
i am new to this mailing list. i have some problems with mencoder. i installed MPlayer-1.0pre3 with XVID-1.0beta2 & everything seems to work fine, but i have problems with the 2pass bitrate control. here is the command line i use to test mencoder:
mencoder file.vob -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1:vhq=1:qpel:me_quality=6:hq_ac:trellis:chroma_me:max_bframes=3:clo sed_gop:keyframe_boost=0:overflow_control_strength=10:max_overflow_impro vement=40:max_overflow_degradation=40:bquant_ratio=150:bquant_offset=100 :bf_threshold=0 -sws 9 -vf crop=720:362:0:56,scale=640:320 -nosound -o mencoder.avi
for the second pass i just change pass=2:bitrate=900 for an example. the thing that bothers me , is that after encoding i don't get the wanted bitrate. when i ask for 900, i get 761 or when i ask for 650 i get 521. it's 1 of 5 times when i get the bitrate i want. maybe i am doing something wrong. i would appreciate is very much if someone can help me. if that helps more, i am using Slack-9.1, PIII-M 1GHz, 256MB ram.
Thanks for your help!
You need to post the FULL output of mencoder or we can only guess what's wrong. My guess is you have an NTSC movie DVD at 23.976 fps and you need to add -ofps 23.976. Also, xvid is not recommended. lavc is faster and gives better quality. The reason for this 'pickiness' is that mplex takes what you tell it about the limitations of the decoder it is multiplexing for seriously. VBR isn't really the issue, its whether the stream goes outside the spec range or not. Being 'picky' about this is vital if you are muxing for hardware DVD/SVCD players if you want to avoid burning 'coffee coasters' instead of reliably playable CDs/DVDs. If you want mplex to be less picky (for example because you intend to use a software player - these handle just about anything) simply tell it to forget about the standards and specify some nice generous settings, big buffers, high maximum decode rate and away you go...
You're definately sure out of luck if you want more than basic AC3 or MPEG layer II audio muxing.
Why would anyone want it to do anything more than that? DVDs/SVCD/VCDs don't support much of anything else.
The classic scenario is a high-quality multi-channel DTS or LPCM audio-track that you would like to mux back into a video stream you have reduced down in size. The current major work-in-progress for the new year is multiplexing of 'subtitles' (SVCD and DVD subpictures - used also for menus in DVDs).
Since the MPEG4 standard suggests a MOV container, it doesn't look like the MPEG file format has much future anyhow.
MPEG-2 is the format used for essentially all broadcast TV (standard and HD), and there very very stand-alone MPEG-4 players available. A common application is taking a digital TV MPEG-2 stream via a suitable tuner card and transcoding / muxing to DVD. Of course, for PC based play-back you are very much better off coding to MPEG-4 or other more modern formats.
I think I speak for about 90% of the complaintees when I say, it works well, it's just too slow. ffmpeg's mpeg2 codec is young, but is already about 3x faster than mpeg2enc.
Unless I'm very much mistaken ffmpeg encodes MPEG-2 with interlaced support and B frames off. These are on by default in mpeg2enc. If you turn them off mpeg2enc runs a little over twice as fast (17 fps vs. 9 fps on my Athlon/XP 2100+). These features are expensive to code properly... B frames require big motion estimate search radii and are unfriendly to predictive motion estimators and interlaced coding requires you to motion estimate a frame once as a frame and then a second time as two fields. The upcomng release of mpeg2enc has the defaults set to ffmpeg like behaviour... One thing though, when i resize a movie it doesn't actually resize it - it only resizes the window, so there's a heap of black around the movie to fill the window. Anyone know how to fix this or why it's doing this?
You're probably using a video output plugin that doesn't support resizing (e.g. -vo x11.) Try another one that does support this (-vo xv is recommended.) You can also press F for full screen, but the same rule applies. Also, xvid is not recommended. lavc is faster and gives better quality.
is this generally recognised or is the jury still out on this one? I thought there was still some discussion about quality?
It's generally recognized as true around here because nobody has been able to prove us wrong. A while ago I tried a sample encode with xvid 1.0 beta 2, and was impressed with the results; when I compared it to lavc, I really couldn't decide which I liked better.
