I use mencoder to grab videos from my tv card with libavcodec on an AMD 450 Mhz and it works good. My system is a Redhat 7.3 with gcc "2.nine6". I know that you don't want any bugreports when someone uses this compiler version. But I used a few versions before 0.90 pre9, and it always was an improvement. but now, I get a lot of strange error messages. I start mencoder with: mencoder -o /bb2.avi -endpos 01:00:00 -tv on:driver=v4l:width=384:height= 288:device=/dev/video0:norm=pal:chanlist=europe-west:outfmt=yv12:forcechan=1:audiorate=22050 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1:vbitrate=705 -oac pcm using this settings, I got a framerate of 24 - 25 fps. I've tested a few kernel version 2.4.18-3 and -5 and -10 and -17x from redhat 7.3, and it is always the same.
