Something seems to be missing from my system as far as Mplayer packages and/or codecs are concerned. Mplayer will play windows wmv media files, but I get no video - only audio. I have the following Mplayer packages installed: gnome-mplayer-0.6.3-1.fc7 mplayer-1.0-0.41.rc2.fc7 mplayer-codecs-20061022-1 mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1 mplayer-fonts-1.1-3.fc mplayerplug-in-3.50-33.fc7 I also have win32 codecs installed. What am I missing? As you have guessed, my os is FC7. Thanx, JD

You need to post full mplayer -v file.wmv output. Otherwise we can't tell what's wrong.
I have the following Mplayer packages installed:

That's two versions obsolete. F-8 will go out of support in a month. I suggest you upgrade to F-10 or at least F-9. RPMFusion contains a more recent MPlayer package for these releases. Hi Dominik, Thanks for replying. As far as upgrading to FC10, or even fc9 - I am hesitant! Since FC7 came out, I have literally spent months makeing all my media player work - They did not work from full install of FC7. I really do not want to go through that pain all over again. Anyhow, I made an error in my typing when I reported the problem. The problem occurs when I use gnome-mplayer, but does not occur when I use mplayer. I thought gnom-mplayer is just a GUI front end to mplayer - so why does it behave differently from mplayer, and can I fix it? Cheers, JD Dominik 'Rathann' Mierzejewski wrote:

I'm pretty sure that mplayer will not play the video using the xv output since you xvinfo command returns no xvideo capabilities. Try gnome-mplayer with the x11 video output and it should work. If you still think that mplayer uses xvideo. Please post a run of mplayer with the xv vo set and the -v option, I would like to see what it says. Turns out that even though the config file is setting vo to xv, mplayer uses x11 driver. In fact I tried all drivers listed by the command mplayer -vo help, except x11, as the driver to use in the config file. Mplayer seems to completely ignore the config file setting and uses x11 driver (which works). But if I invoke gnome-mplayer, then the setting in the config file seems to take effect. Thus, with config file set to xv, mplayer ignores it, whereas gnome-mplayer extracts it and explicitly passes it as an argument to mplayer. This is similar to the behaviour of explicitly specifying -vo xv on the command line (i.e. no video is played). I will have to build latest mplayer from source. Cheers, JD Kevin DeKorte wrote:

That's because you have two sections (profiles) of settings in your config file, one [default] and one [gnome-mplayer]. You're changing the setting in the latter profile, hence only gnome-mplayer uses it. It'd work with regular mplayer too, if you used -profile gnome-mplayer on the command line. I see - OK Thanks! I will try to build the latest release of mplayer. I do not know if it has any performance improvements over my current version. Thanx to all for the feedbacks. Cheers, JD

Send us your output from a terminal using "mplayer -v somefile.wmv" so we can see what your system is doing.
