Running mencoder result PC freeze (issue report)
Hi. I got some problems trying to record from tunner. Details follow. Paul. Issue type: Hard Crash (the computer locks completely and it needs the Reset button to reboot the pc) It crashes usualy after few minutes or seconds. I noticed that this happens only on bigger video resolutions. --------- * command line: mencoder -tv driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:input=1:norm=pal:device=/dev/video0 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1000:vqmin=2:vqmax=31:keyint=300:vqscale=7:v4mv -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64 -o rec`date +%Y%m%d_%H%M%S`.avi -vf lavcdeint tv:// (the same problem happens with v4l and/or other video codecs) -------------------------- * mencoder version (compiled by myself) MEncoder 1.0pre6-3.3.3 (C) 2000-2004 MPlayer Team CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Athlon Thunderbird (Family: 6, Stepping: 2) Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes CPUflags: Type: 6 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0 Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx ---------------------------------------------------------- * System AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz, cache=256KB (cpu temperature after crash and reboot=about 40 Celsius Degrees) ram=256 MB hda: ST340810A, ATA DISK drive (40020 MB) w/2048KiB Cache hdb: SONY DVD RW DW-D18A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdc: WDC WD1200JB-00EVA0, ATA DISK drive (120034 MB) w/8192KiB Cache hdd: LG CD-RW CED-8080B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive bttv: driver version 0.9.14 loaded bttv: using 8 buffers with 2080k (520 pages) each for capture bttv: Bt8xx card found (0). bttv0: Bt878 (rev 17) at 0000:00:0a.0, irq: 10, latency: 32, mmio: 0xee001000 bttv0: using: Jetway TV/Capture JW-TV878-FBK, Kworld KW-TV878RF [card=78,insmod option] bttv0: gpio: en=00000000, out=00000000 in=003fffff [init] bttv0: using tuner=5 bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA9875 @ 0xb0... not found bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA7432 @ 0x8a... not found bttv0: registered device video0 bttv0: registered device vbi0 bttv0: registered device radio0 bttv0: PLL: 28636363 => 35468950 .. ok Sound cards 0 [Live ]: EMU10K1 - Sound Blaster Live! This is almost always caused by overclocking, but if it only happens with tv capture (and not encoding from a file) it might be hardware/driver problems with v4l. In any case it's not an mencoder issue. But I can recommend one thing: try encoding from a file instead of from v4l2, and if it still happens, you KNOW for certain you have fauly hardware (overclocked cpu, bad ram, etc..) Rich

Or maybe a bad cooler... Try, after a crash, to look at CPU temp in BIOS, if it's coming down, it usually means the crash was because temperature. -- What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?
