So my next question is, perhaps, a naive one, is there any driver that supports all the features? No. If there was, there wouldn't even be this discussion. The problem is that there is no perfect solution... With NVidia you have to live with binary-only drivers, and with ATI you have to live without many features of the card.
A popular feature is MPEG2 decoding on the video card, which is not supported on any cards with the GATOS driver. But current cards support it, didn“t they? Does not exist any driver for this? Most ATI cards for quite some time have had the hardware for MPEG2 decoding built-in. Even before the Radeon line came out, it was common.
No drivers that I know of support it. GATOS drivers are pretty-much _the_ drivers for ATI cards on XFree86 systems, and the GATOS developers seem perfectly content to only support the basic functions of the card.
