Overall, mplayer seems to work fine on my machine. With one DVD (with English subtitles) the error message in the above Subject line is produced. What might cause this? -vf spp,scale (as suggested in the run below) had no effect. Mplayer is compiled from source from today's CVS (and ffmpeg), and the "all" codec package is installed (I think). The DVD plays fine under the player bundled with Mac OS X.
