Generally, I would not use mencoder and cat to concatenate files. I had firstly audio desync secondly not a good image for a few seconds when fast forwarding through the film.
I personally have made much better experiences with the current avimerge tool provided with the transcode package. Firstly, no audio desync, secondly not these ugly artifacts when moving through a film.
