when encoding "dark" movies like "Panic Room" or "From Hell", the assumed bitrate to end up in a divx about 1400 MB, i.e. about 1390 for "From Hell", does end in an avi of around only 900 MB (3-pass encoding). Giving the bitrate of about 1200 to mencoder does not make any difference to

The command line for mencoder has been:
(have encoded the audio first), then -->
nice -+19 mencoder -dvd 1 -dvd-device $DVD_DEV -oac copy -o /dev/null -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1386:vhq:vpass=1:vqmin=2:vqmax=31 -vop scale=640:352,crop=720:434:0:74
wait
nice -+19 mencoder -dvd 1 -dvd-device $DVD_DEV -oac copy -o from_hell.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1386:vhq:vpass=2:vqmin=2:vqmax=31 -vop scale=640:352,crop=720:434:0:74
Thanks for hints,
Hmm, isn't the whole idea of a two-cd dvd rip that you want to keep the video bitrate reasonable and use -oac copy to get 5.1 ac3 audio?? Using insanely high bitrates like 1200+ will not generally improve quality (unless you're using a crappy encoder like divx3/4, or HUGE resolution).

Hello, oh, I do not know if it is the "whole" idea of two-cd dvd-ripping is "only" to keep the ac3 audio from the dvd. I would say that it depends on the movie's length. If it has got a playtime of around 2 hours, in my experience a 700 MB or 800 MB CD is not that ideal to make a "quality" divx. What I want to do is to make DVD (backup) copies which are almost as brilliant as the DVD videos are. For this, a bitrate of 1200 should be enough, a bitrate of around 800 won't. And, taking two (or more) audio streams from the movie, encoding them to quality (4) ogg vorbis and then putting it together to an ogm, one could easily reach a targetted size of around 1400 MB. Saying some words to encoding "dark" movies, I have taken two ac3 streams from "From Hell" and have put it to the divx, so, at the end, I have reached a size of about 1350 MB ;-) Bye, Stephan
