This may be offtopic, but did you manage to get standard PCM and optical to work concurrently? I currently have to switch asound.state files for it to enable AC3 passthrough... it's not perfect, but it works. For that matter, have you tried anything newer than 0.9b10? My AC3 passthrough broke with 9b12; if you feel like providing your asound.state that would be nice too. ALSA-0.9 invented the idea of cards, devices and dubdevices. You can reach the digital interface of all supported cards consitently by using the device 'hw:x,2' (x counting from 0 is the number of your soundcard).
Hmm, it's hw:x,3 for the sblive cards... I've been wondering for a long time why your instructions didn't work for me until I read some alsa-driver doc about the sblive mixer and changed the adsp mapping to device 3.
Additionally I'd like to note that some alsamixer switch needs to be turned on to get some output - it's the "IEC958 Optical Raw" switch for the sblive.
