2 pass with lavc, 2nd pass looks a little worse (only a little)

in the docs, it says that the second pass should look considerably better than the first pass, but for me it doesnt. it look the same it some parts, and WORSE in others. i dont think this happened before, but i cant remember the version of mplayer/mencoder that i used to use that worked great. it was an old old version, like 0.60, or somewhere close. now my second pass looks, like i said, the same, with some parts looking worse. i looked closely... even on scenes where it looked bad on the first pass, looked jsut as bad on the second pass... im compressing a dvd-rip, ntsc, and according to mencoder, its telecined, so i set the ofps to 24 :) and it duplicatres LOT less frames than it used to :) (but this is not what appears to cause my problem with mediocre 2nd pass outout fules.) and yes i know technically it should be 23.973 or something like that, but 24 is good enough for me :) i dont get any errorrs, and im compressing with lavc/mpeg4. heres my command: mencoder NationalSecurity.vob -aid 128 -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=96 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1000:v4mv:qpel:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01:vhq:vpass=1 -sws 2 -vop scale=608:336,crop=720:466:0:4 -ofps 24 -o NS-compressed-1.avi && mencoder NationalSecurity.vob -aid 128 -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=96 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1000:v4mv:qpel:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01:vhq:vpass=2 -sws 2 -vop scale=608:336,crop=720:466:0:4 -ofps 24 -o NS-compressed-2.avi (it should be all one line, but i think my email client messed it up...) so any ideas? if necessary i could upload the first and second pass output files, but they each ~700MB... which kinda surprises me actually... theyre so close in size to each other...i think less than 1MB difference. shouldnt the second pass have a bigger or smaller gap in size? any ideas? thanks, farrell farahbod

I have a quicktime file, using the DV-NTSC codec (ID_VIDEO_FORMAT=dvc). I can play the file fine using mplayer, but when I use '-vo yuv4mpeg', mplayer crashes, outputing only the 52 byte header to stream.yuv. I am using the lastest CVS version. I have tried other videos (both QT and AVI) using other codecs, and do not have this problem. Reading raw audio/video streams

I have seperate raw audio and video streams which I'd like to encode/play using mencoder/mplayer. Since the streams aren't muxed together, I want to pass the data as two fifos to mplayer, but mplayer doesn't like fifos, so this doesn't work. My current solution is to write the raw video to a fifo, and the raw audo to a file. I can then start mplayer using: cat vidout.fifo | ./mencoder -audiofile audout.file -audio-demuxer 20 -rawaudio rate=32000 -rawvideo on:w=640:h=480 -o out.avi -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame - (this only works in CVS, mplayer <=0.91 doesn't support -audiofile with -rawvideo) And this works, but it generates an intermediate audio file which is very large, and I am not sure what happens in the case where mplayer reads faster than the data is generated (in theory this would just stall the player, but I'm not really sure) Since I am generating the streams, I could mux the audio and video together, but looking at demuxer.h, mplayer doesn't seem to support any demuxer that works with raw video and audio (there are seperate RAWVIDEO and RAWAUDIO demuxers, but nothing that will handle both in one stream) Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can make this work without generating intermediate files (either using fifos or a muxed stream to stdout?). I don't want to deal with the complexity of adding a container...that is what I'm using mencoder for in the first place. Thanks, .Geoff

Hello, First of all I would like to thank you for the great work you guys have done with mplayer. Ok, now to the point. I'm a Mac OS X developer and I'm currently in the process of creating a new version of a movieplayer I created in the past. Now, I have been experimenting with mplayer and I would like to use the binary as a backend for my movie player. This is only so I can play formats that QuickTime can't play, such as DivX, MPG2, ASF, WMV, etc.. My application was and will be totally free. Hello again I have a crash in mplayer I already reported this crash once but had little feedback, so here I go again, but with a patch when I run "mplayer -slave <audiofile> " then, while playing, I send the following command "loadfile <anyfile>" I get a crash audiofil has been tested with wma and mp3, anyfile with mp", wma and a couple of avi and mpg files a quick gdb run as documented in bugreport.html provides the following information crash happens at mplayer.c, in main line 3314 the line is int pts = sh_video->pts the problem is in an osd update block, it tries to update the video display but the sh_video pointer is null. the attach patch simply check for this null pointer. Crash at the end of a very brief file

I've got a group of ten-second video clips without any sound. Most of them play fine, but for one of them, at about the same time when the others end normally, MPlayer crashes. Trouble caputring audio with saa7134 tv card

Hello, looking for some hint on some trouble I have getting audio to work with my mencoder setup. The encoded AVI files does not contain any audio stream, neither from the TV card itself, nor from the line-in of my sound card. Xawtv runs smoothly, and I can separately record the TV audio with eg the command line tool 'record' , no problems here. I use Kernel 2.4.21 with the Kraxel patch for v4l2 and his saa7134 driver version 0.28. Now mencoder dumps this output: What is this ioctl failure? Why is the line-in sound not recorded although the mixer setting is unmuted and set to 'capture'?
