As I see in the mplayer-dev list there is now some effort to mantain the italian documentation. I can help, and, after is finished, mantain the italian man pages (I think i need some help on the beginning, after the transation is done for the man page i think (hope ?) that the work in not too much harder ..) Someone got some clues (or some part already done to use) ? Someone else is interested (so we can split the work ...) ? Daniele Forghieri P.S. Feel free to contact me on my address, even in Italian!

The man page probably is the hardest part, but it is also the most important.
Someone got some clues (or some part already done to use) ?
There is an old translation lying around that you can use as a basis. Please read DOCS/tech/translations.txt and come back if you still have problems.
Someone else is interested (so we can split the work ...) ?
Nicola Lacquaniti <nicpa@tiscali.it> Talk to him. Thanks Diego
Ciao Daniele! I've been captured by the same crazy need as you are (translate the man page in italian!) It would be nice if we could join our efforts, so i think we could do a better and speedy work. By now, I've asked for priority the mailing list, and the great Diego pointed me to the DOCS/tech/translations.txt, as you can imagine, where in my previous mail i asked

Excuse me, but I haven't understood: would do you like that I start to translate/syncronize, the messages or the xml or the man pages? (All together is too much to start!)
that was because in a former email Roberto Togni said:
Ciao Nicola.
I try to keep the message file up to date as much as possible, so it's usually in sync with the English version. But that's the only part of the Italian documentation that's maintained.
So i've understood that: - the italian messages are maintained from Roberto Togni and are up to date. - the man pages are obsolete (ancient?), and, as Roberto said, is better to restart than to modify the old version. - the man pages are the second in the kind list for the translations. From Diego mail:
Short answer:
1) messages 2) man page 3) XML
- No way: WE HAVE TO TRANSLATE THE MAN PAGES!!! But i think we don't have to start absolutely from scratch: for all questions about consistency we have the big job done by Roberto Togni, the italian messages! He has already resolved the painful translations of things like 'flip', 'stream', ecc. (that in my opinion is better to NOT translate at all - they are now common words in all the word in my opinion). I haven't read all his translation, but i think we MUST use his one for consistency (if users read a console message they would like to find the explaination with text search in the man pages) So we are: can we split the document and do the job together? I need to start the work (without waiting for coordination) because is almost a month that this idea flies in my mind (have the man page translated before the 1.0 release) and if I don't start it i never done it. After the initial burnout i thing is better to coordinate the work to have some good man page. P.P.S. I want to work on the man page ecause i read once the html doc and almost 50 times the man pages (and i missed something after 50 times ....)

Wow! I've done the same too, perhaps we can join our translations together! Only a little thing: you have changed the revision in .\" $Revision: 1.0 $ but doing so we can't know the english document from which we have started! Perhaps could be better do something as .\" $Revision: 1.545 $ // the original english document .\" Traduzione italiana rev. 1.0 // our revision or .\" $Revision: 1.0 $ .\" Dalle pagine man inglesi rev. 1.545 we have to take into account that, even when we are talking, the english man pages are upgrated by the developers, so we have to keep trace of our and original revisions.
This can not be perferct but may be a good start.
I agree on the fact that some terms must not be transated (or must be transaled with the same word each time).
I don't know anything about the messages *(i use then english version) but in the week end i take a look at them to try to use the same words.
The messages file attached are the english and the italian ones, we can use them as a reference.
BTW it may be nice to have, at the beginning of the man page, a list of word that we think is better not translate ( stream, streaming , demux and codec are the first that come to mind) and a little explanation of what they mean.
I agree, but I think that this could be a conformity problem with the man pages translated in the other languages: perhaps other people in this list (with a better knowledge of the documentation system - Diego?) can suggest us the right way to do that... If I have time I can try to do a list of words that we will not translate and send it to you, for your revisions. I really like the translation Stream<->flusso for example, I wasn't able to find nothing for stream like yours one!
Attached there is the very first part of the man page (try that with man -l mplayer.1 after you expanded them).
The missing part is already in english.
We can split the work, i will continue with the video encoding option so feel free to do some other part ;-)
Ok, during the week-end I'll try to do OSD/SUB OPTIONS, AUDIO OUTPUT OPTIONS (MPLAYER ONLY), VIDEO OUTPUT OPTIONS (MPLAYER ONLY), DECODING/FILTERING OPTIONS Nicola

If you could stick to a rule that first line of manpage is .\" synced with 1.xxx and second line of each xml file is <!-- synced with 1.xxx --> It would comply with what is a custom now in documentation, and would be easier to automatically track unsynced files.

Look at main/help. If you know C at least a bit than it's easy - messages are just definitions in header files.

I'm not Diego, but I suggest you should agree on it between yourselves. It's language dependent and there is no place it should go in. And IMHO it should not be visible to end users. Torinthiel says it all :-) Decide a good translation and stick to it, it's up to you. BTW, the Polish translators already have some experience with translating as a team and it works remarkably well. IIUC they have some shared infrastructure, maybe they can help you out with that. Hmm, Spanish is also translated by two people, dunno how they manage, though. Diego
