Hi there, I have the feeling that quite a lot of people are interested in the slave mode, but don't think about having a look in DOCS/tech/ Is there any reason slave mode is not included into, the XML doc (this could be a job for me)? I guess it's probably where it should be so people have a chance to read it... What do you think? Guillaume -- Live fast, die old, and make very sure everyone knows you were there. -- Alan Cox

People read the XML docs?? ;) I always considered slave mode slightly more technichal than most (l)user stuff thats in XML docs... But I guess it would be a good idea to put it in the XML docs too, as most stuff is migrating there now too (encoding-tips...). Someone would have to be responsible in making sure it's synced to slave.txt though... - ods15

Maybe a better idea: How about turning it into a man page? How should it be called? man slave doesn't found any slave program on my system, so I think it could called slave.1. Another possibility would be to call it mplayer-slave.1 (and maybe bind mplayer-slave to "mplayer -slave". I'm not sure if what I'm saying is clear, but I'm sure ppl see the point. You lost me on the 'bind' thing.. (you do know that '-slave' is a legitimate command line option?..) I'm not sure if i preffer XML docs of man page for this thing.. i actually preffer the text file.. Text files for me personally have the biggest advantage of being the easiest thing to read, no special tool necessary and very little is "enhanced" by using other formats... but I do see your point in it not being popular... MPlayer doesn't "spam" man pages all over, and I kinda like that, so my vote is XML docs... (and obviously put a mention in the man page in the -slave option.. come to think of it, I just remembered, slave.txt is also mentioned there... how could people possibly be missing it if they are using -slave if it's right there next to the option??..). BTW, slave.txt (or the XML when it exists, whatever) should be mentioned when input.conf is mentioned in the man page, cause it's also very relavent for input.conf (and actually is more important to (l)users...). - ods15

Of course. What I meant by bind is like adding a shell script that launches mplayer in slave mode when you call 'mplayer-slave'. Off course, the command line arguments of mplayer-slave would have to be "forwarded".

slave.txt is organised in a man page-like layout. converting to a man page won't be too time consuming. [..] -- Live fast, die old, and make very sure everyone knows you were there. -- Alan Cox

A symlink would suffice, with the addition that we could automatically switch on the slave mode if the binary is called mplayer-slave.

And not a bad idea it is. I second that. -- MPlayer RPMs maintainer: http://rpm.greysector.net/mplayer/ "I am Grey. I stand between the candle and the star. We are Grey. We stand between the darkness ... and the light." -- Delenn in Grey Council in Babylon 5:"Babylon Squared"

Okay. good idea, I hadn't think of that.

Good. It's already done and out in the wild! :) Please review and comment Best regards, Guillaume -- Live fast, die old, and make very sure everyone knows you were there. -- Alan Cox

Which reminds me of the mplayer/mencoder in one binary patch that was posted a while ago. What happened to that? :) I thought it was a good idea and it also might help with "viewing the output while it's encoding" that somebody asked about. If libvo is in the binary, mencoder could use that while it's also writing to a file. Something like have a split video vf that's added to the normal filter chain. One direction follows the normal encoding path it is doing now, and the other path of the split goes to vf_vo and some libvo output. Hmm, I just see this goes to -docs and not -dev, but anyway :-)) --Ivo

There is a link to it from the XML docs, dunno if it is enough. In the past it was duplicated between the HTML docs and DOCS/tech/ IIRC, we then decided to just keep it in the latter with the rest of the developer documentation. Diego
