I don't know how current this is, but I read in http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/tech/wishlist that you're interested in "continuing the MEncoder tutorial." I would like to contribute some case studies in the same style/depth as http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-enc-libavcodec.html#menc-fea… (the Harry Potter example). You already have an "encoding to PSP" guide, but little else on targeting specific output devices. I've used mencoder in a variety of ways, including - interlaced camcorder DV output to 320x240 iPod 5G-compatible H.264/AAC .mp4 files (remuxing with mp4creator) - widescreen DVD movies to QuickTime 7-compatible H.264/AAC .mp4 files (again, remuxing with mp4creator) - 4x3 TV shows to XVID/MP3 .avi files to be played back on a Philips 5960 DVD/set-top box (with its own interesting quirks and limitations on max bitrate and MPEG 4 options) I've spent quite some time digging through the latest CVS docs and various mailing lists to get high-quality results in all cases. I was wondering if these sorts of case studies would be welcome in the MEncoder docs. -- Cheers, -Mark

help_mp-en.h commits to -DOCS

Hey all, I noticed recently that commit mails for help/help_mp-en.h go to the -cvslog list and not to mplayer-docs. I'm not completely sure if it changed somewhen in the paste or came up after a change in the ml configuration.However, I think it's important that these messages go to -docs (or to both -docs and -cvslog); translators are advised to subscribe to -docs and -translations and that should be enough to follow changes in the parts that are important for translations. ML admin, namely Diego I think, please add the file to the regex that chooses files for -docs.Thanks :) Sebastian

mencoder.xml issues

The time has came for me to read mencoder.xml ;) Here's what I want to point out: The tables at the first section (a/v codecs and container formats) use capital and non-capital letters at beginnings liberally. I'd vote for starting each entri with non-capital letter, except of course for MPEG, Xvid etc. See patch #1 Section 13.8. Encoding from multiple input image files (JPEG, PNG, TGA, SGI): The title of this section is the only place in the whole file where I (or grep) find SGI. Either add some text/examples or remove it from the title. Examples: Almost all of them have overly long lines. Most of them can be broken (see patch #2), sometimes by reordering the options, hopefully I've done it right (will double check before commiting). A lot of them also have missing <replaceable> tags, added as well. The i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames -lavf option: At first I thought it was 'insert here all options to certify...', not a real option name. I even translated it in first try. Only grepping the sources convinced me otherwise. Maybe it would be worth noting this in documentation. Good thing at least there's a big fat explanation if you omit this option. General XML source formatting

I will (time and laziness permitting, so don't hold your breath too much) try and reformat the XML documentation to stick to some common guidelines. Problem is setting those guidelines. My propositions are: <sect1>: before each sect1 there's a line of  with two blank lines before and two after. <sect2>: before each sect2 there's  with blank line before and after. <sect3>: two blank lines before. <title>: Each title goes just below it's corresponding tag (<sect?>, <formalpara> or whatever), and stays in one line (this can mean the line can get very long). <para> start-tag and end-tags in separate lines, don't indent the content (more than <para> itself is indented, that is). Things like tables, lists etc: start and end tags in separate lines, increase indent by 2 spaces, item start and end tags as well in separate lines (but when whole item contains a single <para> or something like that than this <para> goes with element start tag. All 'small' tags (title, ulink, link, application, keycap, etc.) fit in a single line. Line limit of 80 characters (With exception of small tags above). <screen>: either in single line, like small tags or like this: <screen> text (with no indent) \ maybe continuation of a longer command (indented)<screen> with <screen> and --> beginning at the current indentation level. Any comments? Objections? Better formats? Clarifications? I'm not very much attached to this, we just have to start at something and this seems to be mostly how the doc's are formated now.
