Hi, what about two new options for the gmplayer, namely load-and-play (start playing after file or playlist has been loaded) and play-and-quit (quit gui after all files have been played)? I'd like to have these and would code them. Ingo

wait, so gmplayer is staying? What's with all the trolling in the changelog and on the ML then?

that changelog entry was from reimar cleaning up mplayer code and removing some gui mess from it. suggested bikeshed plans over the years: a. remove gui b. remove gui hacks and add new slave options to give any frontends the same powers as gmplayer c. keep gui, do plan b and make gmplayer use those new slave options instead. d. keep gui until something breaks and then we can rm -rf gui/. e. remove gui and slave mode and change mplayer into a library. not sure what the current plan is, reimar is the planmaker now. -compn

Being new to mplayer, I don't know yet what the gui hacks are. I wouldn't mind gmplayer not being part of mplayer, but I'd like to preserve a simple but powerful gtk-only based gui like this. For the time being, d. (keep gui - mostly as is) would be easiest, but b. plus c. (either gmplayer part of mplayer or a stand-alone gui) sounds good, although I have no idea what work this will imply.

grep for CONFIG_GUI, all of these special cases for the GUI in the normal MPlayer code should go away. The whole code below gui/ is quite hackish, ugly and generates a lot of warnings...

I really wonder if gmplayer is the best base for that and if there is a point in keeping gmplayer inside the source tree of MPlayer. Diego

Thanks a lot. I'll have a look.

My first goal is to entirely understand how gmplayer works with / is integrated into MPlayer and to improve it a little bit by doing this. The question really is whether it is worth putting effort into gmplayer or into slave options (currently don't know anything about these) for other GUIs. (I'd like to have a look at gnome-mplayer if Kevin could make it compile without dbus or other dependencies.) If there is an equivalent or better simple, gtk-only GUI, gmplayer can go. If not, it might be removed from the MPlayer source tree but stay as one of several GUIs. Ingo

It has its tentacles all over the place :)

I do personally consider the internal GUI a dead end and to be honest, I have lobbied for its removal for a long time. Improving the slave interface would benefit all GUIs, so I personally consider this more valuable.
If there is an equivalent or better simple, gtk-only GUI, gmplayer can go. If not, it might be removed from the MPlayer source tree but stay as one of several GUIs.
I'm happy with either of those alternatives. Diego

Ingo, gnome-mplayer can now be configured to not use dbus (autodetected when dbus development packages are not installed or --without-dbus), SVN r1817 of gnome-mplayer is required for this feature. However, with dbus support disabled, gnome-mplayer cannot function with gecko-mediaplayer to support media in firefox. gnome-mplayer would work when compiled with dbus support, but dbus was not running, but this patch allows it to be compiled when dbus is not present. Thanks. I compiled it and it looks quite nice, but unfortunately segfaults or hangs after opening a video. I'll have a deeper look later. Ingo

Ingo, Please email me privately or on the gnome-mplayer mailing list with the faults you are seeing. I did test it here prior to committing the patch. So maybe something in your environment that is causing it. If someone maintains it the reasons to remove it would be gone. Otherwise we want to make sure nobody gets to complain if we remove one day when it gets in the way enough.

Ingo, gnome-mplayer has both of those options, any reason why that front end would not work? Dependencies. It does not compile without dbus.

And why is dbus such a problem? Also, I am working on making dbus support optional. I'm pretty happy without dbus for years now. Installing dbus (and - in addition and as a consequence - several other software packages to get dbus compile) only to have a gui running seems unnecessary to me. As far as I can see there is no gui out there that only has a simple gtk dependency and is yet powerful enough - except gmplayer. (No offence against other guis, I'm sure they are excellent, but I'd like just a simple, gtk-based one.) Ingo
