Really?? I'm sure I've seen this story the other way around (Ki and Mi used as binary, not decimal).
you're right... http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html read this, it has also explanation about lower and uppercase b for bits vs bytes and other things on this topic. with google i also found that both XFree and linux kernel followed this spec. and changed messages recently.
