An update to this bug: after I pause audio becomes jittery, but if I seek in the AVI, it becomes stable again.
I'm afraid I don't know enough about this to fix it, but I'm happy to provide more info or look into it myself with a bit of direction.
Thanks, Jason.

CVS mplayer is exhibiting a bug where when you play a movie with AC3 passthrough (using alsa in my case), the audio is fine until you pause it, and after you resume, it is jittery/skippy.
MPlayer 0.90rc5 does not have this problem.
I am calling mplayer this way:
mplayer file-with-ac3-sound.avi -ao alsa9 -ac hwac3
Again it plays fine only until I pause it.
I am using alsa9 with hwac3 and it works fine for me. You may try to use -cache, sometimes that can fix jitter problems. I can play HDTV mpeg-ts streams as well as well as avi's with ac3 without problems using nVidia nForce2 audio (Asus A7N8X deluxe) optical SPDIF output. Sometimes I get a sharp click noise after unpausing, which is probably caused by some partial ac3 packet that my reciever cannot decipher. But after that single click, audio is fine. I used the 9/20 CVS as well as the 10/12 CVS, both are fine. I tried 192kbit and 384kbit 2 channel AC3 files. Zoli
