IMHO it should always be lowercase (bit). Same goes for 'byte', too. IMHO it's kB -> kiloByte, but kb -> kilobit...
Of course 'B' is for bytes and 'b' is for bits. But please, don't get me started with that old flamewar about prefixes. KB for kilobytes (binary, ==1024), kB for kilobytes (decimal, ==1000).
