An update to this bug: after I pause audio becomes jittery, but if I seek in the AVI, it becomes stable again. I'm afraid I don't know enough about this to fix it, but I'm happy to provide more info or look into it myself with a bit of direction. Thanks, Jason. MPlayer 0.90rc5 does not have this problem.
I am calling mplayer this way:
mplayer file-with-ac3-sound.avi -ao alsa9 -ac hwac3
Again it plays fine only until I pause it.
