[PATCH] New filter vf_ivtc, smart dropping of every 5th frame

Hi, after using mencoder for awhile I came across movies with (real) 29.97 fps which were created from a 24 fps source by inserting a duplicate frame after every 4th frame. When (re)encoding these movies it would be clever to drop these duplicated frames to save bandwidth and to eliminate the jerky motion artefacts. But to only use the option '-ofps 23.976' is not satisfactory because mencoder bluntly drops every 5th frame regardless of being duplicates or not; or missed I something? So I wrote a filter which does the job - other programs like transcode or VirtualDup already have one. There have also been requests concerning this issue: http://mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-users/2002-September/020628.html http://mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-dev-eng/2002-January/004502.html Some implementation details; how I see this problem; things I would like to discuss: - To detect the duplicated frames it is necessary to buffer at least 6 frames (you cannot display/encode the frames and decide afterwards 'Oh, I wanted to skip that frame'). But buffering (at least of this amount) is not supported by the vf-API (am I right?). So I had to expand it by introducing a new image-type MP_IMGTYPE_BUF. - Unfortunately I have to memcpy the whole frame to the buffer. It would be better to store only the meta-data/image-structure but this did not work (the information was lost during two calls of 'put_image'). - You need to also specify the '-mc 0' and '-noskip' option to mencoder otherwise mencoder complains about missing the first frames (which are gone to the buffer and were not yet displayed) and tries to insert frames. - 'put_image' is not noticed whether this is the last time it is called, but it needs to flush the buffer then, otherwise the last frames are lost. This cannot be done in 'uninit' because then everything is already over (files closed, image-structures invalid). The hack is to provide the total frame number as a hint to vf_ivtc via commandline, thus 'put_image' knows when it is its last time. - All in all it seems that the libMPcodecs API does not like buffering and skipping frames that much, it is not designed to provide such things, is it? For example a return code of 0 or -1 to indicate that a frames was skipped. (At least this information is not passed to mencoder) - Is a filter really the right way? Maybe it is better to provide this functionality directly by mencoder/mplayer. I'm not so intimate with the API details so it is likely that there are more elegant solutions. Despite all the problems and hacks the filter works here quite well and produces the correct result even if there is a change in the pattern of duplicated frames (counted as 'resyncs'). Hello everybody! Hoping to bring the linewrap saga to a good end, here is my latest patch for the README. Lines are wrapped on column 80, meaning there are at most 79 characters of text on one line. Hi, I noticed a problem where an mpeg2 stream triggered twice a "vo config". In this case, the stats_file is opened twice for writing. The first config happens at the start of the mpeg2 stream, the second at the end. The effect: The stats_file is opened for the first time. A lot of lines are written. Then the file is opened a second time, a few lines are written at the start, the file is closed only once and filled with '\0'. The proposed patch just ignores the second attempt to open the stats_file. Ciao, Dscho

I would like to suggest adding the following patch to the cvs [requires the patch posted a few days ago, which adds the module parameter "major"]: This patch adds the module parameter "mga_number". On a system with multiple matrox cards or a matrox card with multiple chips, this parameters selects which matrox card/chip is used (in the order of found devices). Then, one can load the mga_vid module once for each card. Say, on a system with two cards, the /etc/modules.conf can look like: --- alias char-major-178 mga_vid alias char-major-179 mga_vid options char-major-179 -o mga_vid-1 major=179 mga_number=1 --- Note that the "-o" option loads a module under a different name. This allows loading the mga_vid module several times. Hi. I have seen your discussion about Fast-Forward (http://mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-dev-eng/2003-February/015835.html) I am working on it too, from a different direction: I have started to patch libaf, so that it will handle the play-speed changes using the SoundTouch library (http://www.sunpoint.net/~oparviai/soundtouch/) which will allow speeding up the video, keeping the audio in sync and preventing the pitch change (better than what you get when playing VHS in double speed, isn't it?). I haven't finish it yet, but not much has left. I am not near the box which I use for developing it, so I can't attach my patch so far :-(. It seems like combining my patch with Struan Bartlett's one will give the perfect result. BTW: the magic numbers (the speed up/down factor, max/min speed) in Struan Bartlett's patch should become a config option (IMHO). BTW2: do we really want to reset the speed each time the user change between speeding up and speeding down? I would like it to behave like a knob, not like some very weird switch with a knob next to it. BTW3: since you reminded EDL: does anybody work on it correctly? Do you have any road-plan about how to expend it?

[PATCH] Timer cosmetics

I found it quite confusing that mplayer kept reporting "Using usleep() timing" even though it actually never did. Even before I wrote the mac-specific timer, it used nanosleep() timing :) This patch changes textual references to usleep in mplayer.c to timer, and makes it ask the timer for a name. This way it will now print "Using usleep()/nanosleep()/CoreFoundation/Win32 timing" whichever is appropriate. By the way, shouldn't RTC timing ideally be a timer as well? - Dan Christiansen
