has anyone checked to see if the wmv9 codecs for mac are seperate form the binary or even not, checked to see if they can be used with mplayer? http://www.flip4mac.com/downloads/wmv_player/Flip4Mac%20WMV%20Player%201.0.z... http://www.flip4mac.com/buy.htm for a trial player that should have the wmv codec. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default... for wmp9 for mac, which says it can play all of the wma9/wmv9 stuff.

It's just a QuickTime codec (although the free version does something to prevent it from working outside QT Player). The qtvideo decoder ought to load it if it's fixed up.

This decoder is so slow as to be useless.

what about wma9, wmavoice, wmalossless and possibly other codecs included? how slow? wouldnt it be useful anyways at least for encoding?

How slow? It works fine for me in WMP on Mac OS X. Diego

How difficult to decode was your video? I've seen plenty of reports that dual-G5 Power Macs can't play 720p WMV9 properly, and my G3 can't even play 320x240 clips without dropping frames. Flip4Mac's Quicktime plugin is much better at it, but mplayer going through a QT interface would only be able to play the first half of anything unless the user paid for it. http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/ 5330947495/r/1080988495#1080988495

my biggest problem with it btw. is that it does not work as a quicktime plugin.... he's not a codec... and he refuses to open anything that's not very-ms-formatted ;) so the (now quite widespread) wmv3/mp3 anime avi files are still unplayable on mac-osx :(( which is especially sad considering http://nanocrew.net/blog/technology/wmv9linux.html . btw. i sent him an email, no reply ;( asked on the vlc list, was told that he is waiting for the VC1 standard to become final or what ;( gabor
