Hello! I'm still very interesting with standards for kernel_vid drivers in mplayer stuff!!! Unfortunately, Romain Dolbeau have wrote me: Well, apparently Linux stated he wants IOCTL out of the kernel, so I guess a new IOCTL-based interface is out of question :-( It _might_ be integrated in 2.4 (it was designed for 2.4.x, after all), but I don't think there'll be enough interest. OTOH, your stuff is apparently using an non-IOCTL interface ; if you can make it chipset-independant, it will be of interest. Also, more parameters will be needed I think. ... It seems that his stuff will never appeared in the Linux. OTOH - GATOS have leave linuxvideo and have been moved into sf.net. As I understand - mplayer is only project which contains all kernel_vid drivers. So we have chance to develop new standard ;) It's need for futured development of our drivers. (M$ implemented new DirectX standards enough frequently but we are behind now :( ). mga_vid currently is bottleneck for radeon :( We should expand it or introduce new interface. Well - it would be possible to implement fbvid.h based interface or any other. As I already wrote - there will no problem of backward compatibility with existed matrox drivers. Any idea, suggestions, commentaries - PLEASE!!! Best regards! Nick

Yes, a fast and generic interfaces is a real need for linux (and other free unixes). At the moment, the only generic interface is X11 (XF86 to be precise), but X11 is designed to be a 2D interface w/o optimisation for multimedia at all. I dont know how good Xv is, but i think it's too big for what we need and also not available for every graphics card. Or in short words: yes, please do it. I know i neither have the time nor the knowledge to really help you, but you can count on my for testing (but not before february :-( Greetings Attila Kinali -- I am a moslem, i am a terrorist.

Indeed, to implement useful standard we need in volunteers currently I know only two drivers: mga_vid and radeon_vid. But if someone who has video wil write such driver - we'll be able to implement something like ALVA (Advanced Linux Video Architecture). But I'm waiting for Arpi's replying - since he is owner of mga_vid stuff in mplayer ;)
Greetings

Hi Nick, i'm willing to implement nvidia_vid if a standard will be set. Also i've got ideas to it. Greetings, Alex On Fri, Dec 14, 2001 at 07:03:02PM +0300, Nick Kurshev wrote:

Did you ever ask someone from the other player projects like vlc, ogle or xine ? I'm sure they are interessted too. And if we build a standard, we should do it together. Attila Kinali -- I am a moslem, i am a terrorist.

Currently I know too much different drivers: marvel.sf.net - direct DVD support and MPEG2 decoding on Matrox (announced at least) linuxvideo.org - mga_vid + mgadvd(old) mplayer - another mga_vid + radeon_vid linuxconsole at sf.net - here is fbvid.h which was ignored by kernel mantainers

Best regards! Nick P.S.: Arpi? Why you don't use mgadvd driver in mplayer?
Hi,
P.S.: Arpi? Why you don't use mgadvd driver in mplayer? as i don't have DVD module for my g400... (and as now i have g550)

Look also at marvel (mga+rrg) drivers. There is mga_vid ported to v4l interface - so why not use v4l for this. Maybe it would be better to extend existing v4l interface and not create new one. At least those drivers are working for TV/video capture (so there should be update in FAQ). It also contains stuff for mgadvd module. Look at: http://marvel.sourceforge.net/ JS
