Someone in #mplayer pointed it out to me. I don't know when it happened, but it's easy to reproduce: a simple mencoder -ovc copy -oac lavc -o newfile.avi somefile.avi && mplayer newfile.avi will give you "your system is too slow" and freeze-frame'd video because audio timestamps grow ~50 times faster than video.
