This looks like a bug in the driver. I think sample rate/format changes and mixer control changes go over the same I2C bus.
Please try some ALSA version newer than 1.0.10, but I guess this is a new bug.
ALSA 1.0.11 is now in Debian unstable and I have upgraded to it. However, the problem remains. Diego
