anime,pullup,skipped/duplicated frames
hi, i am trying to encode something from an anime dvd. first i am trying to find a way to get rid of the telecine, -vf pullup works fine, when i play the video with "mplayer -vf pullup", i can see that every fourth frame is duplicated (so it was like ABCDD ABCDD ABCDD ). i tried something like this: mencoder -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts turbo arusu-intro.vob -ofps 24000/1001 -vf pullup, softskip -o arusu.avi what i get at the end looks ok, but while encoding i'm getting frame_skipped and frame_duplicated messages. for 90seconds of anime, i got 75skips and 22 duplicated frames (full gzipped mencoder log attached). isn't that too much? or is that number ok? why? should i maybe try a different -ofps? thanks, gabor

Yep - you're going from 30 fps to 24 fps, so of course! You may want to do something like: mencoder -oac copy \ -ovc lavc \ -vf scale \ -zoom \ -xy 640 \ -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:nr=200:mbd=2:autoaspect:v4mv:trell:vbitrate=1800 \ -ofps 24000/1001 \ -alang jp \ -sid 0 \ -o arusu.avi dvd://1 >& /dev/null This way you won't see any messages about frame_* ;^)

You are, I hope, going to use more elaborate -lavcopts when doing final encoding, aren't you?

No, it's quite normal. You may try different pullup modes though to see if you get better results, i.e. -vf pullup=::::-1 (less strict breaks) or -vf pullup=:::::1 (use chroma plane). See man mplayer.
should i maybe try a different -ofps?
Assuming this reall is telecine (and it appears so), definitely NOT. Regards, R. -- MPlayer RPMs maintainer: http://rpm.greysector.net/mplayer/ "I am Grey. I stand between the candle and the star. :) sure, i just wanted to test the pullup filter first.

ok, will try them. thanks, gabor

it depends on the content. during stills pullup has no information to go on, so it will output exactly what it got as input. dropping some of these frames (which are all the same) during the still is no problem. duplicate frame messages come when pullup outputs too _few_ frames and mencoder has to compensate by duplicating one of the ones there. it's normal to have a few because of unmatchable fields at scene changes and such, but 22 sounds like a lot. all i can say is to step through the whole thing frame-by-frame and see if you're satisfied that pullup isn't dropping too much. using -v gives you an ascii-art representation of pullup's field matching, btw.
should i maybe try a different -ofps?
24000/1001 is almost certainly right, but there are some rare cases where anime also has 30fps content mixed in.. you'll have to watch to see, but there's still really nothing good you can do since mencoder does not support vfr (variable framerate) and most of the content will be 24000/1001. rich

Boy, my mencoder must be magic. Somehow I can transcode a dvd that has varying frame rates to a constant frame rate .avi... and I don't even have to specify -vf pullup, it just does the right thing, dropping frames when necessary, or adding them as the case may be (depending on what -ofps I specify, of course).

And how is mencoder reversing the hard telecining (to give you progressive fields) without any ivtc filters like pullup? It'll give you 24000/1001 fps output, but it'll be a lot of mismatched fields.

Well, the result looks fine, and when I reencode the rip to make a dvd (say, with 2 movies on it) it comes out just fine as well. Mencoder does spit out messages on stdout/stderr saying that it is detecting the frame rate change, perhaps it defaults to using some form of pullup in this situation? Or perhaps it is just luck, and things look right because the main title is generally 24 fps in cinematic releases anyway? The changing frame rate is normally just during the inital titles, when it would be less noticeable if something subtle were wrong. Maybe I just haven't hit a dvd where things would go wrong. I admit to having transcoded very few dvd's. The vast preponderence of material that I work with is P2P files. The video/sound sync is perfect.

pullup is not about getting the correct number of frames, but reversing hard-telecine (where the pairing of fields in the dvd mpeg don't match actual frames). rich

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that they were the same thing, just that the right thing seemed to be getting done.

Yeah, as long as the only '30fps' zones are just stupid still title/credit screens added to the dvd that weren't in the original movie, it doesn't matter if you use an ivtc filter or just -ofps by itself. However it does matter if the movie has a mix of hard and soft telecine. Rich
