mencoder/mplayer, -ss and DVDs
Hi, I'm trying to use mencoder to rip and encode a segment from a single chapter of a DVD. My command looks like: mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 7-7 -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=1000 -vf scale=720:480 -ofps 24000/1001 -ss 43 -endpos 129 -o grosse_pointe_blank-720x480-1.0Mbps-mpeg2.avi but it seems to ignore -ss. -endpos works fine though. Is this not possible? Do I need to rip and encode the segment from the beginning of the chapter and then re-encode it (using -ovc copy) with -ss 43? Will that work? sooner or later we'll have to make it clear in a FAQ: at the moment seeking in mpeg streams is not reliable, so you had better use -sb with a search&refine series of attempts.

Or, he can use MEncoder's new EDL feature, with -hr-edl-seek . Instead of seeking, it just drops the unecessary frames. - ods15

Maybe you could make some option by which -ss could use the hr-edl-seek code for precision seeking without the use of an actual edl file. Rich

This does not work. If I try: mplayer dvd://1 -chapter 8-8 -sb N where N = 5, 50, 500, 5000, 50000 or 500000 it still starts at the beginning of the chapter. If I try -sb without specifiying a chapter it starts at the beginning of the disc. I'm using mplayer dev-CVS--3.3.2. -- Jason Bodnar jason@shakabuku.org http://www.shakabuku.org "You want free speech? You can't use -chapter together with -sb afaik. You have to pick the position within the entire title. Anyway these numbers are way too small. 500000 bytes is something like half a second into the movie. Try a few orders of magnitude larer.. :) Rich
