Hello, mkv is merely a container, so the quality of the video wouldn't be impacted ... if you use a codec which is understood by the avi container AND you don't use specific feature of mkv (multi video, soft sub, ...) If these requirements are met, then you can just use the ovc and oac "copy" mode mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy -o my_avi.avi my_mkv.mkv Cordially 2009/6/21 <rulet1@meta.ua>:

No, you are missing the point. Both avi and mkv are *not* codecs, but container formats. If you just copy (instead of transcode) the video and audio streams from a mkv container to an avi container- the quality will be the same. As to mpeg, if the original video in the mkv container is a mpeg stream then you can just simply do a copy and will not loose quality. If the original is not a mpeg stream, you will need to transcode, thus loose quality. Charles -- Microsoft is not the answer. Microsoft is the question. NO (or Linux) is the answer. This is not true. theoretically avi can contain any codec, but whether it can be played, depends on whether your player supports it. I can play avi's with h264 content with no problems with mplayer (as long as h264 is compiled in). Charles -- We are MicroSoft. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. BS. It plays fine with mplayer and ffplay on my Linux machine. It will work with xine too. I just did a test clip and transferred it to my friend's Windows machine. It will play in VLC and WMP. I bet more players support this than the mkv container. Charles -- "The world is beating a path to our door" -- Bruce Perens, (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

It is not enough to say that home theatre "plays AVI" because AVI could contain so many different things. You have to ask what codecs are compatible. -- Peter

Well, it's mostly that VFW can not handle it correctly, and due to the many dependent B-frames (and thus long codec delay) it is hard to handle H.264 in AVI correctly, so you have to expect that quite a few applications will handle it wrong. It's basically this issue: http://guru.multimedia.cx/avi-and-b-frames/ just that it is worse for H.264 (you can of course encode to H.264 without B-frames and there should be no issue at all then).

I wasn't talking about that. I was only saying that H.264 video in AVI is no problem, ie; you can store such video in AVI and nothing really prevents you from doing it... Whether that's a good or bad thing is something else which I wasn't talking about. Yes, b-frames in AVI are problematic as you said but it's not illegal. If specific piece of software/API can't handle it correctly, that's something else which again I wasn't talking about. it's funny, people look away at MPEG4 ASP with b-frames in AVI (which requires the same "hacks", more so if b-frames are packed) but when it comes to H.264 with b-frames in AVI, they scream death and destruction. Yes, H.264 and the way it handles b-frames makes it more problematic for AVI but I have yet to see any loss, either quality-wise or something else, when looking at H.264 video in AVI...
