Converting ape and flac files to mp3
Dear All, I would like to convert a collection of audio files, some of which are encoded in flac and others in ape, to mp3. I would like to use maximum constant bitrate of 320 or higher. Could someone please show the command line to do so? Cheers, JD

Could someone please show the command line to do so? I've always had trouble getting MEncoder to process only audio (without using -of rawaudio, which wouldn't work for this anyway). You're better off using FFmpeg and piping the output to a CLI MP3 encoder (lame or whatever's out there; I rarely ever encode to MP3, since I prefer AAC for lossy audio). If your Monkey's Audio files were encoded with a version higher than 3.99, FFmpeg probably won't decode them properly, in which case, you'll likely need to use the CLI from the Monkey's Audio website (and use Wine). There may be a Monkey's Audio decoder that can handle the new format, but I don't know of any.
Something like this: ffmpeg -i file.flac -f wav - | lame -b 320 - file.mp3 or flac -d file.flac -c | lame -b 320 - file.mp3 wine mac.exe file.ape file.wav -d lame -b 320 file.wav file.mp3 (the Monkey's audio tool doesn't seem to support writing to stdout)

Of course rawaudio would, in fact, work. But just adding rawaudio won't help without a video stream. I have no idea why you're so confident and yet so backwards.

I have no idea why you would insist on using ffmpeg when mplayer would work... better in-fact. -- Don't trust me! I'm wrong!

How?

Thanx for the feedback. I will give it a shot.

wine mac.exe file.ape file.wav -d lame -b 320 file.wav file.mp3 (the Monkey's audio tool doesn't seem to support writing to stdout)
I use mac $1.ape - -d | lame --preset standard -h - $2.mp3 (change `--preset standard' to `-b 320' if needed) - peppered with needed calls to `nice'. Hope this helps, Ilya

Hope this helps, Ilya Whenever I use such a command, it treats - as a file. Maybe you are using a modified build (I've seen sources for a beta build of 3.99 floating around). I use the latest version from the Monkey's Audio website (4.05).

All that my version says is --- Monkey's Audio Console Front End (v 3.99) (c) Matthew T. Ashland --- Maybe the code has some special "dumb down for certain platforms" #ifdef's... Yours, Ilya

I doubt it. I don't see how the ability to use standard streams would adversely affect the clueless GUI-dependent user... I think the 3.99 sources floating around have been modified.

Have a look at Sox. Mplayer/MEncoder isn't really intended for audio file conversion. http://sox.sourceforge.net/ It definitely handles flac. Not sure about ape as I've not come across that one. Just found this, audio-convert. https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/audio-convert/ Part of it's functionality is the ability to convert from ape and it's basically a Bash script which calls MPlayer for the ape conversion function. You might want to take a look at it. (or just use it - why reinvent the wheel? ;-)) -- Dave
