two pass encoding with pullup
Hello. I'm happy for the usefullness of two pass encoding. However, I'm having difficulties understanding how to use it with IVTC filters, like pullup. What should the first pass look like if I use pullap to ivtc the video? should the pullup filter be active on both passes or just on the second? The reason I ask is because when I use the pullup filter on both passes I can sometimes see some ugly bit usage on moving objects and so on. I havn't tried yet with pullup of on the first pass, but I'm still not sure if that is the right thing to do... thx for any help.

Yes. Exact same filters must be used on both passes, _especially_ with any filter that alters the number of frames!

Huh? If you're having trouble with it you should preview with mplayer first, and possibly tweak the options to pullup or use one of the other ivtc filters. Also make sure you're using it correctly to begin with. In any case, this all has nothing to do with 2pass encoding. Rich

I thought as much...

the video looks good when I watch it in mplayer, but I'm beginning to think that pullup doesn't always drop the same frames, and that's why the video becomes strange... I guess I'll just have to experiment a little to see if I can get it working with pullup or any other ivtc... Thanks for the help.

Are you following the directions that say you MUST ALWAYS use the softskip filter with pullup for encoding? If you're going to ask questions here you REALLY need to show us the full exact command lines you're using at the very least. Rich

yes, sorry, I just wanted to know if it was a common problem... Anyway, first pass: mencoder -noidx -nosound -noaspect dvd://1 -chapter 16-20 -ovc lavc -vf pullup,softskip,phase,hqdn3d=12:0:10,unsharp=c7x7:0.5:l7x7:0.5,crop=704:464:6:8,scale=640:-3 -ofps 24000/1001 -lavcopts qns=3:cmp=2:subcmp=6:preme=2:predia=3:dia=3:last_pred=3:vmax_b_frames=1:mv0:cbp:qprd:trell:preme=2:keyint=300:v4mv:mbd=2:vqscale=2:vpass=1 -o /dev/null second pass: mencoder -noidx -nosound -noaspect dvd://1 -chapter 16-20 -ovc lavc -vf pullup,softskip,phase,hqdn3d=12:0:10,unsharp=c7x7:0.5:l7x7:0.5,crop=704:464:6:8,scale=640:-3 -ofps 24000/1001 -lavcopts qns=3:cmp=2:subcmp=6:preme=2:predia=3:dia=3:last_pred=3:vmax_b_frames=1:mv0:cbp:qprd:trell:preme=2:keyint=300:v4mv:mbd=2:vbitrate=1145:vpass=2 -o finished.avi the difference is only that I added qns=3 on the second pass, and the bitrate (vbitrate=1145 instead of vqscale=2).

That's true, but when I looked at a previous encode with pullup I didn't think it was that good, it still had some interliced frames, so I thought phase might would make them less noticable.

Hello, what happens if you add "-fps 30000/1001" to both passes? You should also leave the bitrate (rather: all lavc-options) the same on both passes! Only exception: If you want the first pass to be fast, you can use the "turbo"-option on it. This will deactivate cpu-intensive options, without screwing 2pass up. Another thing, that comes into my mind: I had some trouble using pullup with mencoder a while ago. Using filmdint instead did help back then. Maybe you should try. bye, hco

OK... Acctually I thought that the bitrate didn't really matter in the first pass... qns is *very* cpu intensive, that's why I didn't use it in the first pass, it takes quite some time to encode something on my box... I might try the turbo option...

It does, but not _that_ much. Please have a look at Loren's explanation of how to tweak 2-pass rate control at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/tech/encoding-tips.txt Basically, you might what to encode first pass at constant quant if the final movie ends up being encoded with a similar average quant, and if you tweak a bit the option vqcomp. As far as I'm concerned, I encode first pass with a constant quant of 2, and set vqcomp to 0.7. Then in the second (an up) passes, I use the "normal" bitrate. That might be suboptimal, but I've been quite happy with the results I've had.
qns is *very* cpu intensive, that's why I didn't use it in the first pass, it takes quite some time to encode something on my box... I might try the turbo option...
The turbo option is supposed to deactivate all CPU-hungry options that aren't worth it in the first pass, and ONLY in the first pass, so my advice would be to add it all the time to you encoding option set, as if it's not the first pass, it just does nothing at all. The problem is that it leads to a small decrease of PSNR, but not something you might actually see (unless you're an alien ;-) ). Guillaume

Well, I'm not an alien, nor a fly, so I guess turbo can't hurt... Besides 5fps is a huge speedup from 1 or 2 that I had before. I guess using vqcomp can't hurt either, I'll give it a try. Thanks alot!

It keeps on sounding like you haven't read the manual. The (poorly named) filmdint filter IS an inverse telecine filter, except when it decides not to be.. :) Rich

I have read the manual (well, at least most of it...), and I know filmdint is a ivtc filter, I'm afraid that it will "decide not to be" a ivtc filter on my encodes since they are telecined in a very strange way, and that I don't want.

Mostly it's just a ordinary pattern, since pullup can handle it pretty well. The problem is that in some parts of the dvd the video is telecined in two different ways. It has one pattern in the bigger part of the video, but about a hundred pixels from the bottom it has another pattern that I just can't figure out. However, since it's not that much important that happends in that part of the video I rather leave it telecined than deinterlice, to preserve details.
I feel I have to go back to the reason I posted this, because I didn't really get a clear answer. Is there anything in my options that could make mencoder fail to put the bits in the right place (causing ugly moving objects)? Or is it a bug? Or could it be that pullup drops different frames every pass and that way can't follow the log from the first pass? Encoding in three passes makes the encode only slightly better, I havn't tried more passes, and since encoding with all options activated goes very slow (0-1 fps) I probably wont have time to in quite some time. sorry to bother you again... Your "ugly moving objects": is there combing, or just mpeg artifacts? If it looks fine after encoding with vqscale=2, then the problem is just that your bitrate is too low or something. Actually a few comments on your filter chain: Do the cropping (and possibly scaling too?) before sharpening and denoising. Sharpening before encoding is a very bad idea. It will always reduce quality. If you want a sharper picture do it at runtime during playback. Again, phase is not a good idea. If only a few combed frames are making it through, try pp=l5 after pullup to blend them away and you probably won't notice it.. Finally make sure you're using latest cvs. And you probably don't need nearly so many fancy options to lavc. They slow you down a lot and hardly improve quality. Rich

It's just bad bit usage, it puts to much bits on the parts that aren't moving, and thus to little on the parts that are. This makes the moving objects look very "pixly" and ugly.

Thx, that helped a little. after moving the sharpening and denoise filter to after croping and scaling it looks much better. It still doesn't use the bits as good as it does if I deinterlice the video, but maybe if I make one or two more passes it will get better. I know sharpening a video before encoding isn't really optimal, but I really don't feel like remembering what movies to sharpen at playback and what movies not to, so it's mostly because I'm lazy. I'll see what difference it makes not to sharpen later though, to see how much quality improve. Also I'm not sure all my computers can sharpen during playback, they might be to slow. After removing the phase filter the movie mostly looks fine, but at times the pullup filter forget a frame. I will probably not see them if I don't think about it though...
Finally make sure you're using latest cvs. And you probably don't need nearly so many fancy options to lavc. They slow you down a lot and hardly improve quality.

I've got that hint many times now, but for various reasons I want to continue using the latest release instead. The main reason is that there is no (gentoo) ebuild for the mplayer cvs, thus it makes it troublesome to install and uninstall. Well, I might install it anyway if the next version isn't released fairly soon, because I want to be able to play matroska files with h.264 codec. Thx for the help, greatly appreciated!
