wmv audio codecs support at linux 64 bit system?
Dear all, At 32 bit system (FC 3), after put window codecs files (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/windows-all-*.zip) to mplayer codecs directory (something like /usr/lib/win32/), then use can ffmpeg/mencoder to decode wmv video/audio to avi format. Now tried at 64 bit system (CentOS 5.1), even put those file to correct directory (64 bit one is /usr/lib64/codecs/, which rpm from DAG), it seem ffmpeg/mencoder can't use those file to decode wmv audio (it shown error "Cannot find codec for audio format 0x162" from mencoder ). From google, it seem that only win32 codecs file for mplayer, so it meaned that needed to remove the 64 bit version of mplayer and related package and then install 32 bit one? Thank a lot

Thank a lot

I think you haven't understood the impact of AMD64/x86-64 extensions. There is a small set of architectural enhancements which were also introduced, which lead to small performance increasements. But apart from that, all you basically get is the extension of address space. (So for applications with a large memory footprint (we're speaking >4GB), that may indeed help.) The performance impact is minimal. But I indeed believe it's quite unfortunate having to revert to 32bit applications and libs on a 64bit OS. Moritz

You really should actually benchmark such statements, for H.264 the difference in my tests (which may not be representative) were > 10% in decoding speed. Probably mostly due to having twice as many registers available in 64 bit mode. Also, for this case I would suggest using a newer, SVN MPlayer version, all variants of WMV and WMA1 and WMA2 should be supported without any extra codecs.

Unfortunately, WMA3 (0x162, 0x163) is quite common.

ype. just tried to download the sample wmv file from microsoft website and use ffmpeg to decoding, it shown "unknonw audio 0x162" at the 64 bit version. But it work file at 32 bit version with .dll file

Sorry, I didn't benchmark, I relied on hearsay. Articles such as this one and quite a few others: http://www.osnews.com/story/5768

I agree, indeed 10% is (or _may_ just be, according to the use model) significant. Anyway, if it's just for WMA with DLLs, just install two versions of mencoder. A proper one, and a 32bit one for the Windows DLL hack. ;-) Sorry, Moritz

That is a very bad example, since there are no big architectural changes between SPARC 32 and 64, and thus there is a good chance 32 bit mode is even faster. The situation with x86 is very different: in 32 bit mode you have only a measly 8 registers, they are not fully general-purpose (e.g. no way to directly use the 8 lowest bits of ebp), MMX and SSE are optional and have only 8 registers each as well. x86_64 extends these to 16 registers, each fully general purpose (makes optimizing easier for the compiler), mandatory MMX and SSE (meaning the compiler can make use of them whenever it wants, and system libraries like glibc can and will use it as well), also with 16 registers. IOW: SPARC 32 -> SPARC 64 is basically just a step in pointer size, x86 -> x86_64 is a step to a more powerful architecture. Greetings, Reimar Döffinger

I have exactly the same figure here, 10%. And indeed the amount of registers now finally comes close to something usable (having programmed 68000 for years ;-))

Wouldn't that affect performance? ?I haven't seen any, the 64 bit kernal also has the 32bit abi. this way you get access to the microsoft windows 32 bit dlls if you want

I believe ffmpeg does _not_ use such external DLLs.
it seem ffmpeg/mencoder can't use those file to decode wmv audio (it shown error "Cannot find codec for audio format 0x162" from mencoder).
Recent libavcodecs, which are developed with ffmpeg and used by mplayer and mencoder, also support WMV and WMA natively. Well, perhaps not all versions of Win*ows Media, but it has worked fine for me quite some while. ffmpeg -formats | grep -E "wm(a|v)" HTH, Moritz

I can't sure that. But just everything work fine at 32 bit FC3 + rpmfind.net ffmepg rpm and .dll files from mplayer website. Maybe source tarball included all codecs.

maybe caused by newest version if WMV? coz those files download from microsoft website and should be in WMV3 format (code 0x162)

I unfortunately couldn't find samples on the MS website (perhaps I'm using the wrong browser ;->), but I can confirm that the libavcodec/wma.c and wmadec.c known only about "version 1" and "version 2" WMA. Actually, digging further, 0x162 is "Windows Media Audio Pro". http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=Windows_Media_Audio_Pro There's a link in that articles to samples on the mplayer website: http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/WMA9/wmapro/ and indeed they don't play with libavcodec or in ffmpeg. D'uh. Moritz P.S.: Thanks, Microsoft.

The point is probably to let technically challenged people save the file instead of letting it be opened on the fly. Regards, -- Nicolas George
