avi encoding runs great on one machine, fails on another; SRCHSTRNG

hello, on one machine, i get great results. on this one however i am having trouble. Best possible quality from a DVD

Is it possible to copy raw the dvd into an uncompressed mpeg2 using mencoder? I tried mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 3-3 -of mpeg -oac copy -ovc copy -o tvout.mpg That i get a lot of seeking errors, a good video quality but the audio disappears after a few minutes. With the "raw" it encodes but the file size is 2Kbytes.... Then I tried this: mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 3-3 -of mpeg -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=huffyuv:vbitrate=8000:keyint=25 -vf hqdn3d,pullup,pp=md,scale=720:480 -noskip -o tvout.mpg but my mplayer cannot open the video codec. I use this version: € mplayer -v MPlayer 1.0pre7-3.3.5 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: PowerPC the cvs gives me compiling problems. If try to do this crazy thing: mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 3-3 -of mpeg -oac copy -ovc copy -o out.mpeg does work perfectly, but i guess it's encrypted, so useless at the end. Mplayer opens the file, but it doesn't seek it. So, what can I do? I need to do video editing with final cut, do you suggest me to use something like this: mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 3-3 -ovc lavc -oac copy -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=7500:vqmin=1:lmin=1:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:subcmp=2:cmp=2:precmp=2:mv0:autoaspect:vpass=1:mpeg_quant:psnr:vqcomp= 0.7:vqblur=0.3 -o out.avi in a two pass encoding, and use a high quality mpeg4, or find a way to use an uncompressed mpeg2? -- Federico 'Pain' Pistono - Scream for me.... I know we've been over this like a dozen times, but what on earth is wrong with this command line: mencoder -fps 30000/1001 -ofps 30000/1001 -endpos 01:00:00 -oac pcm -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=huffyuv:keyint=25:format=422p -tv driver=v4l2:norm=ntsc:input=2:adevice=/dev/dsp1:width=352:height=480 -vf harddup -af volume=-10 -o tv.avi tv:// Audio sync is hideous, and I'm POSITIVE this exact command worked perfectly earlier. I only dropped 4 frames total during the entire capture. Brian K

Converting an avi file to mpeg2 for legacy players (losing sound and lots of error messages).

I recently bought a digital camera and took some movies of my kids which I wish to share with my family who have older computers or in some cases just older dvd players mpeg compliant. So I want to convert a 30fps 640x480 24bpp motion jpeg video with uncompressed PCM sound into 1) a high quality mpeg2 (the basic dvd movie format right?) for playing on an older dvd player 2) a couple of them need rotating 90 degrees before distributing to other family with older pcs and stock movie players like Windows media player v7 or 8. (mostly solved) I am only converting about 50MB of files and putting them on a cd so compressing the files is not as relevant as making them portable without loosing quality. I have tried (to make good mpeg2): ========================= D:\mplayer>mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video -oac copy -vop rotate=1 in.avi -o test.mpg but get errors like: WARNING: SCR: 170842242, APTS: 0, DELTA=0.000 secs, BYTES=1853135223 ERROR: SCR: 1.872, VPTS: 1.000, DELTA=-0.872 secs D:\mplayer>mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video -oac copy -vop rotate=1 in.avi -o test.mpg more errors, loss of sound and poor quality video D:\mplayer>mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=3200 -oac pcm -vop rotate=1 in.avi -o test.mpg Gives good video but no sound. More error messages. D:\mplayer>mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=3200 -oac mp3lame -vop rotate=1 in.avi -o test.mpg Error messages and crashes the media player. For problem 2: I do this: ================= D:\mplayer>mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2:vbitrate=6000 -oac copy -vop rotate=1 in.avi works well on my pc and seems portable but asking for vbitrate=7000 (almost the same as the original file as reported by mplayer causes the video to freeze on playback using the media player) Thanks for any help! I have never tried to do such a thing, but I guess you want to play with MEncoder's MPEG muxer (-mpegopts), lavc (-lavcopts) with vcodec=mpeg2video. You should be able to adapt the existing examples, given for MPEG4 so that they can be used with MPEG2. I would like to know if it is possible to output MP4 files with MEncoder, like ffmpeg does it ? Actually, my goal is to transcode an MPEG-2 file to an MPEG-4 ISMA compliant one for streaming purpose ( XviD video codec, AAC-LC audio codec and MP4 file format ). Olivier

As a matter of interest, here's the command line I use (in a batch file) to perform the record - can you see any areas / parameters that might improve the situation? (When I'm recording, I get a) jerky frames, but also b) occasional frames that appear 'moved' - e.g. a person will be standing on the left hand side of the screen, and for a split second they appear in the middle - it's like the synchronisation of the screen was off? Anyway, here's the command line: nice -5 mencoder -tv driver=v4l:width=720:height=576:input=1:amode=1:adevice=/dev/dsp:forcechan=2:volume=50 -endpos $2:$3:00 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vqmin=2:vqscale=2 -o $1.avi tv:// - the programs run under root, so I can 'nice' the task to have a higher priority Param 1 ($1) = name of output file Param 2 = hours to record Param 3 = minutes to record. My old command line is: nice -5 mencoder -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:input=1:amode=1:adevice=/dev/dsp:forcechan=2:volume=50 -endpos $2:$3:00 -oac copy-ovc lavc -lavcopts vbitrate=1800 -o $1.lavc tv:// Which gives a larger file - also recording at 640 x 480, but still exhibits the same problems.... That's what TMPGenc DVD Author reports when I try to add the file to a new project. mencoder tv.avi -fps 30000/1001 -ofps 30000/1001 -of mpeg -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=7000:keyint=15 -vf harddup,hqdn3d,pp=md,scale=720:480 -mc 0 -o tvout.mpg It's a 512x384 source file (odd size, I know), encoded with the above command line. I can link to a short (1 second) encoded clip using those same parameters, if that would help. Didn't seem to affect the operation of the disc at all, I just found it odd, and confusing. Brian K
