Hi, I wanted to combine 12 flash video files (from youtube) into a single avi file. So I did cat at Zachar*.flv > Zach_all.flv $ mencoder Zach_all.flv -o Zach_all.avi -forceidx -ovc copy -oac pcm The output shows skipping frames, and missing aspect information, as you see below. What do I need to do to fix that, so thet when I am transcoding into .avi, I do not get these skips and missing aspect info? Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? removing duplicate frames from avi mp4 source file

Greetings, I have these really big *.avi contained mp4 video files, that were originally captured via OpenRTSP/live555 @ 15 fps. (1970x1440). x 1 hr . mencoder determines that there are duplicate frames and then proceeds to encode the duplicates. Then, when playing back the video, the video has these annoying little pauses due to the duplicate frames -- and ofcourse makes the file larger than it should be (~3 GB). I tried the -noencodeduplicat option but I get the same result. I also use the -nosound option because the videos don't have audio.(nor do I want it). I would prefer to still use lavc (ffmpeg codec) for my processed avi file. Would anyone know a trick to get rid of the duplicate frames? thanks for any suggestions in advance, t

hi all, I try to play video file with subtitle by following command $mplayer hifi.avi -sws 9 -vf scale=960:640,expand=osd=1 -sub hifi.srt -utf8 -subfont-autoscale 0 -subfont-text-scale 35 -subpos 98 but it said "Unknown option on the command line: -subfont-autoscale" What did i miss in this command? (i build the mplayer from svn on window using mingw) Thanks.

what video output to select for mencoder when encoding dvd's to h.264

There is something that I don't understand about MEncoder. By default, MEncoder and MPlayer both use xv as video output. But, for example, when I open a dvd title or vob file in MPlayer, it scales it to a 16:9 resolution: ... > Movie-Aspect is 1.33:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect. > VO: [xv] 720x480 => 720x540 Planar YV12 > ... But I would imagine that, for example, this "prescaling to correct movie aspect" where the resolution of 720x480 is scaled to 720x540, doesn't have to occur when encoding the vob/mpeg2 stream to H.264 with MEncoder. So, my first question is: do I have to use a different video output that xv when encoding DVD's/mpeg2 streams to H.264 using MEncoder with x264 ? Maybe a video output that doesn't scale 720x480 to 720x540 and leave all frames unscaled ? The second question: suppose I let MEncoder to select the video output, wich I think it's xv, because i know that MPlayer selects xv by default, and MEncoder is based on MPlayer to decode the frames using a certaing codec. After MEncoder starts the encoding process, if I open a video file with MPlayer, to watch it, is this somehow affect the encoding proccess, just because there are 2 videos opened at the same time using xv as video output ? Or, another example: I noticed that, when flash player is opened because a youtube video is loading in the web browser, mplayer has some screen tearing while flash is running. Does this affect the encoding process, if for example, I watch a youtube video while mencoder is encoding - is it possible for mencoder to send frames affected by tearing, to x264 ?

mencoder is unable to select libmpeg2/mpeg12 decoder

I use this command to encode interlaced DVD to progressive H.264 with MEncoder: mencoder vobfile.vob -vf crop=704:464:12:8,yadif,hqdn3d=2:1:2 -nosound -ovc > x264 -x264encopts > crf=18.0:preset=slower:tune=film:profile=high:level_idc=30:threads=auto -of > rawvideo -o encodedstream.264 The problem is that when I open vob files or dvd titles with mplayer and mencoder, ffmpeg is selected to decode the mpeg2 stream, but in the output it says that this codec is not compatible with the source format: Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vf scale... > Opening video filter: [scale] > The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec. > Try appending the scale filter to your filter list, > e.g. -vf spp,scale instead of -vf spp. So I tried selecting another codec using "-vc mpeg12" in mplayer first, and it wasn't able to start playback. MEncoder outputs "could not find matching colorspace"

When I start to encode a DVD title to H.264 using MEncoder SVN-r33953 and x264 (on Debian Testing, from Debian Multimedia repository), MEncoder outputs the following: Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vf scale... > Opening video filter: [scale] > The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec. > Try appending the scale filter to your filter list, > e.g. -vf spp,scale instead of -vf spp. > but it continues to encode without any problem and the encoded stream seems properly encoded. From this, I understand that it converts the source frames to RBG before sending them to x264, but I don't know if this conversion is necessary, therefore, I don't know if the scale filter is needed, but even if I add it, mencoder tells me to add it.

Just i worry about the availability of PVM within new Software. Within clustering i can read sometimes about PVM, other times about MPI (similar project but more actual). On the other hand i found statements complaining about better writing an own system for communicating since PVM/MPI had too much overhead. But PVM is now rather old and literature seems to be old as well (latest is 2005, official PVM-Book), so i worry heavily about current developments. Actually i asked at the "handbrake"- forums as it was my favorite standalone encoder, but they said their multithreading system was really fit to their needs, pvm changes would be hard to make. Especially since i dont know about it yet, i cannot say I am deep into programming... Also there was a "transcode" project including pvm. But it - and its version was also from 2003. so i worry if there could be problems by including pvm to actual software. Mencoder and PVM support

Hello, I have a project to confirm. I want to add PVM-support to Mencoder and i don't know about the sense or possibilities so far. Does anyone know about this or can guess about that problem of adding PVM. I hope someone knows about PVM as it is rather old. Thank you so far. Markus

That is correct. PVM would be the ability to encode one task one multiple machines. Problem is (for me) that pvm-project is rather old and probably difficult to implement. so i want to check if that is even interesting to invest time in. if not then reasons would be interesting.
