Hi, I wanted to combine 12 flash video files (from youtube) into a single avi file. So I did cat at Zachar*.flv > Zach_all.flv $ mencoder Zach_all.flv -o Zach_all.avi -forceidx -ovc copy -oac pcm The output shows skipping frames, and missing aspect information, as you see below. What do I need to do to fix that, so thet when I am transcoding into .avi, I do not get these skips and missing aspect info? Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? mencoder //tv capture avi index problem

greetings, I'm using mencoder to capture live /dev/video[x] streams tv:// with v4l2 and saving them as ffmpeg mpeg4, single pass files, no audio. They playback fine with the media player in Debian linux, and VLC in windows ok. But I want to use VirtualDub and with any version I try I get this warjning: AVI:Index not found or damaged -- reconstructing via file scan. AVI:keyframe flag reconstruction was not specified in option options and the video stream is not a sknown keyframe-only type. Seeking in the video stream may be extremely slow. Note that I have tried both, the fastfreempeg codec for windows for the fourcc FMP4, as well as -forcecc "XVID" with mencoder, to use the XVID codec on windows and the same message appears. So it must be something going on in the header structure of the file :-? I have also played with keyint=<frames> option. Same result. As another test, I tried the xvid codec instead and that did work although the files generated were much larger for similar visual quality (single pass). Although THIS ONE loaded fine in VirtualDub (1.91, 1.8x....). So I must be missing something or there is a bug with avicodec usage. So I am stuck and stumped. Would anyone have any insight into this problem and a way around it? At least for the copious files I have, I read some threads that indicate mencoder itself can rebuild the index (sometimes) but I'm fairly new with mencoder and I can't quite tween out the best way to do that from the on-line doc and man-page. thanks very much in advance! t

Problems with created vobsub IDXs

Recently I noticed something. This tool has some other issues like not getting the palette right, but by mixing and matching parts of IDX files generate by subtitle2vobsub and mencoder, I can get something that works. Oddly, subtitle2vobsub is derived from mplayer, just from the 0.90pre6 days. I have not yet written a tool if there has been a regression, or what. I've seen some comments about timestamp problems going back to 2003 and even a patch floated in 2005, but never finished up. Using mplayer, the subtitles on the DVD play correctly, and obviously some show up at the wrong time when playing. In tracing through to compare mplayer and mencoder, and going through mpcommon.c and mencoder.c, I did get kind of lost. I have suspicions about mencoder's use of ``v_muxer_time + d_dvdsub->pts - sh_video->pts'' but wasn't able to find the equivalent in mpcommon.c for when subtitles are actually displayed. Anyone have any suggestions on this matter before I start delving more deeply into this? Thanks, mrc

Hi. I've found that mencoder works really well for digitizing the tapes from my analog video camera. With the cropping and deinterlacing mencoder does, the resulting clips look really good on the computer screen. I recently bought a new digitizer - the old one was ten years old and just gave up the ghost. The new digitizer connects via USB and has a built in sound card. I would rather connect all of my video camera cables to just the digitizer box instead of connectig the video the digitizer and the audio to my sound card, so I changed my normal configuration to use the new sound card instead of taking the default and using the sound card built into the computer. Recording with the sound card explicitly set causes frame skips - LOTS of frame skips, to the point that the resulting video is completely useless. At first I thought is was a problem with the new digitizer, but the same thing happens if I specify the sound card built into the computer.
