Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? Hello I am trying to record some vhf tape to dvd but after trying what seems like hundreds of combinations I still end up with a/v sync issues. Over an hour the sync only seems to go out by about 100ms so I was thinking about recording in 5 to 10 minute intervals and then cutting and splicing the whole video back together again using scene changes as markers. Is that possible and is there a way to make mencoder record for 5 or ten minutes and then fire up a second instance say about 30 seconds before the first one ends. I guess this would require some sort of shell script? Would this be the best way to do this or is their a better way? Have Not Been Able to Use mencoder on Hauppauge 1950 Output (-oac copy -ovc copy)

Hi: I'm trying to use the composite inputs of my Hauppauge 1950 to convert some VHS to digital video, and from here I'd like to make clips and such that I can eventually make into a DVD with titles, chapters, etc. The OS version I'm using is Ubuntu Linux 10.04. Once I set up the composite inputs I just do this: cat /dev/video0 > capture.mpg When playing this stream live (using vlc pvr:///dev/video0) it shows the following stats for the stream: Stream 0: Type: Video Codec: MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv) Resolution: 720x480 Frame rate: 59.940059 Stream 1 Type: Audio Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga) Channels: Stereo Sample rate: 48000 Hz Bitrate: 224 kb/s I guess I don't really get the container format from this, but I'm guessing it's MPEG-2 maybe? Anyway, I'm trying to come up with a solution that will work with both file types and does the minimum of video and audio stream reprocessing for frames, bitrate, etc. I want to leave that kind of processing work to the DVD programs. I have also not been able to successfully use the mpeg or other container options in -of lavf. Maybe someone has a recommendation on a reliable container and related options that would let me use -oac copy and -ovc copy? I know this is probably an easy problem to solve. mencoder does not inverse telecine properly; inccorect ofps framerate

Hello, I have a telecined ntsc dvd that plays at 30000/1001 fps and is 6481.056 seconds long. Mencoder's -vf pullup,softskip filters work perfectly, however I'm unable to maintain an audio/video sync when changing the out fps to 24000/1001. For example: 24000/1001 fps * 6481.056 seconds = 155,390 frames that should be produced by mencoder. However, "mencoder dvd.vob -vf pullup,softskip -ofps 24000/1001 -nosound -ovc raw -of rawvideo -o /dev/null" only produces 155,332 frames, which is 2.2 seconds too short (and audio/video sync fails)! If I keep the framerate the same as the source, it produces the correct amount of frames: 30000/1001 fps * 6481.056 s = 194237 frames "mencoder dvd.vob -vf pullup,softskip,harddup -ofps 30000/1001 -nosound -ovc raw -of rawvideo -o /dev/null" does indeed produce exactly 194,237 frames, the same as the source, and the audio/video sync is ok. The point with inverse telecining is that not only do progressive frames look nicer, but discarding all the extra frames allows for a smaller encode. It seams that mencoder can inverse telecine perfectly, it just can't change the source framerate from 29.97 to the desired 23.976. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Xvid bff/tff field order issue

Hi, when transcoding an interlaced mpeg-2 file (DVB-T capture) to Xvid ASP5, the output is always bottom field first, no matter what I do, even though the input is top field first. At least mediainfo reports tff for the mpegs and bff for the Xvids. The resulting videos I take with me to watch them on an analog TV (that's why I keep them interlaced). Most of the time they look fine, but sometimes I get awfull jitter in high motion scenes. Quickly moving objects seem to kind of bounce back and forth. Attempts to cure the problem: A. pre-pending il=s to the filter list partly works: No bouncing, but the video seems to flicker slightly. B. yadif=0 works, too - but I wanted to keep it interlaced. C. pre-pending phase=t - yes, thatś it! Looks nice. (Of course on a progressive display they would all look the same.) Now my questions: 1. Why am I not seeing this effect with all movies? All input files are reported to be tff by mediainfo. Is that wrong? Or am I just occasionally blind, or the effect is almost invisible in movies with slower motion? 2. What's happening? I assume that after encoding with Xvid the movie is still tff, only the flag is set to bff. When I transcode back to mpeg2 everything looks fine again. 3. Could someone please explain (in simple words) the difference between il=s and phase=t? Does il=s just switch the fields within the same frame, while phase=t pushes the bottom field into the next frame? Why does it flicker with il=s? 4. Would it be safe to add "phase=t" to my standard profile? Or would I destroy those movies that otherwise were transcoded fine? video recording using Logitech ultra vison,

Hi all, I use mencoder to record a webcam for security purpose, using a logitech Ultra vison. It works greats to a certain extend - the video file produce run at about twice the real speed - so for the time being I can check the video using VLC and reduce the speed. Hello there, I use a DLNA server (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver) which relies on Mplayer/Mencoder to stream content to DLNA renderers (like my Bravia TV). I use it a lot to stream DVDs from my computer (my DVD-drive is zone 0), and in most cases it works well. DVD streaming is made with mencoder dvd:// [options], and with some titles i have, it breaks. I decided to take my chance and make it use mencoder dvdnav:// [options] instead to see if it helps. It does... With side effects : Streaming jumps backward in the DVD stream repeatedly, making the playback experience rather unpleasant. :-( My question is : - should the -nocache switch be used with mencoder dvdnav:// - could the lack of it cause the jumps i experience? - is dvdnav support in mencoder widely used and robust, or rather untested?
