Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? Best options for recording x264 1pass?

I always record the "Dog Whisperer" TV show using a regular capture board which delivers 640x480 to mencoder using the following options: /usr/local/bin/mencoder -tv device=/dev/video1:input=3:norm=pal-m:amode=1:contrast=5:saturation=-10 -ovc x264 -x264encopts pass=1:crf=26 -oac mp3lame -o /home/fraga/src/tvrecord-${TODAY}-${NOW}.avi tv:// I have a Core i7 930, 6 GB RAM, 1.5TB Seagate HD. But I notice mencoder suffers to maintain the 29.97 fps... it takes some minutes to reach 29.97 fps and my last recording, the audio was slightly out of sync... Before I used the turbo option and it reaches 29.97 fps in the first seconds of recording, but it seems the turbo option was removed. Is there some options I can use to speed this recording? Thanks. mencoder video and audio sync problem

i use this code: mencoder tv:// -tv > driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=hw.2:alsa > -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -o record1.avi or this code: mencoder tv:// -tv > driver=v4l:width=800:height=600:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=hw.2:alsa > -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -o record1.avi and it encodes fine but when i play it with mplayer, the video is rushed, it plays super fast while the audio plays normally and is horribly out of sync. video ends way before audio does. what am i doing wrong?

Streaming media to PS3

Hi guys, I've been trying to get mencoder to work as an external transcoder for mediatomb (A DLNA/UPnP media server). Basically, I need a command line which will convert files to some format that a MediaRenderer (in this case a playstation 3) will support. I've tried searching the web, and found many, many conflicting lists of what containers/codecs the PS3 will play. Some people say that it only supports certain formats on local disks, not streaming, or that certain codecs are only supported in certain containers. I tried most of the formats that are recommended in various tutorials, and they all came up "corrupted" or "unsupported". I'm told AVI can't be streamed, so I didn't use it, but I tried every combination almost at random until I found one that will play at all : mencoder $infile -ovc lavc -oac lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=mpeg2 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:acodec=mp2 $other_options -o $out_fifo Now, I know this isn't probably the best set of options, but everything I've tried changing results in an unplayable stream. So I'm wondering what anyone else would suggest to optimise this. Main priorities are not introducing artefacts (the source files are mostly pretty poor quality, and the TV is an old SD CRT one, but I don't want to reduce quality any further), and processing time on the transcoding machine (which is pretty slow, and needs to be able to transcode in real time). Network bandwidth is not usually an issue; we're either streaming over 802.11n or gigabit ethernet here. I'm using Fedora 14, standard mencoder package (SVN-r31628-4.4.4), with whatever it is compiled with by default. Available output formats: (avi mpeg lavf rawvideo rawaudio) Available codecs: (copy frameno raw nuv lavc vfw qtvideo libdv xvid x264) Available codecs: (copy pcm mp3lame lavc twolame) I'd love to be able to hand the ps3 some format with switchable audio/subtitle streams, but I don't think it supports any. So I'm currently sticking "-aid 0 -sid 2" or similar in $other_options to give me a 'hard-subbed' version of the file. ASS sub works w/ mplayer but not w/ mencoder?

Hi. I want to encode my mp4 file with ass subtitle - with karaoke and many effects - by using mencoder. So I built SVN-r32833-4.2.1[the latest] on Mac OS X i386. After that, I tried to play mp4 + ass with mplayer just have been built. Nvidia Cuda or ATI Avivo Support

I didn't see a good way to search the archives, so apologies if this has already been addressed. Is there any plans in the works for mencoder to support Nvidia CUDA acceleration or ATI Avivo acceleration? My understanding is that they both roughly do the same thing. It currently takes me almost 8 hrs to encode an average 720p HD stream from MPEG2 -> H.264, and my understanding is that you can cut that time by 50% or more with CUDA/Avivo enabled encoders. H.264 Errors on Hauppauge HD PVR .ts File

Hi: I'm trying to convert a .ts file output from my new Hauppauge HD PVR (480p, from composite inputs?) I've tried just about everything I know of in mencoder including some suggestions from the error messages themselves, but I always run into this: Too many video packets in the buffer: (2021 in 33563374 bytes). Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed? For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option. FAAD: error: Unable to find ADTS syncword, trying to resync! FAAD: Failed to decode frame: Unable to find ADTS syncword Has anyone run into this and found a workaround? I did not have much luck with ffmpeg either. CBR video trancoding possible?
