Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? yadif: what does "spatial interlacing check" mean?

Hi, TFM say about the 2 and 3 options for yadif that they "skip spatial interlacing check". What does this mean exactly? What's the better way to go if I want better quality regardless of encoding time? And would recommendations differ if I use yadif in connection with mcdeint? movie from jpg image in .mov container?

Hi, I'm using mencoder to make movie from series of pictures, with the typical command: mencoder "mf://*.jpg" -mf fps=24:type=jpg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell:vbitrate=7000 -vf scale=640:480 -oac copy -o movie.avi for images in the current directory. Actually I picked up this somewhere on the net, I don't understand all the keywords. Anyway, it works. But, I need to import the movies made like this in the mac os moviemaker "imovie". But imovie do not recognize the avi container (or something like that). Then I would like to build directly a .mov movie so it can be read by mac softwares. The mencoder documentation ( http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-quicktime-7.html ) suggests to remux in mp4 using mp4creator; but it's look like this software does not exist any more. I tried to install ffmpeg, but didn't succeed so far :-( So: is there a way using only mencoder either to transform an .avi movie to a .mov or to build directly a .mov from jpg images? Is it possible to do IVTC on video from the HD-PVR?

I recorded a show with the HD-PVR that I know was recorded at 24p and telecined to 30i for broadcast. I have a working command line for shows for deinterlacing 30i content (most of what I record is originally recorded at 30i): mencoder in.ts -demuxer lavf -fps 60000/1001 -ofps 30000/1001 -of avi -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts [x264 options] -vf yadif=1,framestep=2,harddup -o out.avi I've tried various combinations of -fps/-ofps values and filmdint=io= values with no luck. Looking around on Google, someone suggested using Avisynth's TDecimate(), but I need to do these transcodes on a Linux box, so Avisynth isn't an option. decimate or detc may be useful, but I don't know how I would configure them to fit this situation.

Audio sync problems with HDV footage while performing an inverse telecine

I have about ~5,000 HDV files recorded using an Canon HV30 Camera set to it's HD 24F mode. In order to get a proper 24P video file you need to perform a inverse telecine. I'm using the following method to create huffyuv files which I then transcode again into Apple ProRes for use in Final Cut Pro. The page http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/ lists several methods to perform the inverse telecine process but mencoder seems to be the only one to do it correctly for me. JES-Deinterlacer produces some strange video artifacts.. Anyway, I'm having some issues where some of the files have audio sync issues. Sometimes it's just off by a constant rate like and I just shift it in Final Cut and it's fine. Other times the file starts in sync and then gradually looses sync. I'd say about 10-20% of the files have audio sync problems. Here is my current process mencoder INPUT.m2t -noskip -fps 30000/1001 -vf pullup,softskip,harddup,scale=1920:1080 -ofps 24000/1001 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=ffvhuff:autoaspect -oac pcm -o OUTPUT.avi ALSO, If I perform a mencoder INPUT.m2t -ovc copy -oac copy OUTPUT.mpeg and then transcode to huffy will produce different results and sometimes produce a correct final output. I've tried the most recent builds and a few older ones.. I seem to have the same results. I originally followed the guide at Any suggestions? Thanks Eric Wescott

"Too many video packets in the buffer"

I've been trying to transcode some 1080i TV content now that I have access to a machine that will do it faster than 2fps. However, I keep getting that error and I have no idea why. I remux the video with tsMuxeR (with the contSPS and insertSEI options) since that seems to make a cleaner input file (fewer errors). This problem happens whether I use the remuxed video or the original. I was looking through the archives to see what causes this and all I could find was something about it happening when the sync goes way off, but that's not the case here (I watch the status line and the sync never gets off by more than a few hundredths of a second). mencoder input.m2ts -msglevel all=1:statusline=5 -aid 4352 -fps 50 -ofps 25 -of avi -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=30:force_cfr:turbo=1:frameref=1:scenecut=0:nf:nocabac:bframes=0:partitions=none:no8x8dct:me=dia:subq=0:aq_mode=0:nointerlaced -vf yadif=1,filmdint=io=50:25,hqdn3d=0:0:4:4,harddup -o test.avi

Why is remux with encoding to avi with ac3 sound needed?

Hello, I reencode my TV-SAT-Card recordings to make them easily watchable on my stand-alone (by this I slow them down at film speed.) At the moment, my mencoder-order looks like this: mencoder -noskip -noodml -forceidx -ffourcc XVID -ovc lavc -speed 24000/25000 -ofps 24 -vf hqdn3d,harddup -channels 2 -srate 48000 -oac lavc -af lavcresample=48000,scaletempo -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:v4mv:mv0_threshold=0:last_pred=3:predia=2:dia=2:vmax_b_frames=0:precmp=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:preme=2:autoaspect=1:vqscale=2:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=8000:acodec=ac3:abitrate=448 movie.m2v -audiofile movie.ac3 -o movie.avi I am really surprised of the high quality of the picture although it is a reencode of an already compressed source (mpeg2). But to make the reencode playable, I still have to remux the whole output of mencoder (e.g. with avidemux using copy-mode for audio and video). The most obvious problem is, that the original output of mencoder plays with vlc and xine without sound, the remuxed video shows no problems nowhere. Smplayer has sound, but the time position isn't shown correctly (it looks more like smplayer counts frames than seconds an minutes....) I already added the noodml and forceidx options to fix this but without success. Kind regards Bernd B.

mencoder fails to read files created by dvgrab

Hello, I am trying to move recordings from my Digital8 camcorder to my computer and encode them with x.264. So i grabbed the recordings with dvgrab -a -srt some-recordings- which seem to work fine. The resulting files are played fine with vlc. When I try to play those files with mplayer, some of them can be played, others not. However, none of them can be handled by mencoder.
