Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? yadif: what does "spatial interlacing check" mean?

Hi, TFM say about the 2 and 3 options for yadif that they "skip spatial interlacing check". What does this mean exactly? What's the better way to go if I want better quality regardless of encoding time? And would recommendations differ if I use yadif in connection with mcdeint? "Too many video packets in the buffer"

I've been trying to transcode some 1080i TV content now that I have access to a machine that will do it faster than 2fps. However, I keep getting that error and I have no idea why. I remux the video with tsMuxeR (with the contSPS and insertSEI options) since that seems to make a cleaner input file (fewer errors). This problem happens whether I use the remuxed video or the original. I was looking through the archives to see what causes this and all I could find was something about it happening when the sync goes way off, but that's not the case here (I watch the status line and the sync never gets off by more than a few hundredths of a second). mencoder input.m2ts -msglevel all=1:statusline=5 -aid 4352 -fps 50 -ofps 25 -of avi -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=30:force_cfr:turbo=1:frameref=1:scenecut=0:nf:nocabac:bframes=0:partitions=none:no8x8dct:me=dia:subq=0:aq_mode=0:nointerlaced -vf yadif=1,filmdint=io=50:25,hqdn3d=0:0:4:4,harddup -o test.avi

Empty output file when copying ac3, wide screen option added for mpeg2

I don't get any "too many packets" messages or any other kind of error. Encoding appears to proceed normally, except that the output file remains empty (0 k in size). The problem is present only for the current release (31097) and at least one release prior to that. After reverting to my previous build without success, I recompiled and installed the release I was using around the first of April (30945), and that did solve it. My configure files for both 31097 and 30945 are identical, and when I tested by building and installing each version today, the failure only and always occurred while using 31097. With either version the output file is created. The problem is that in the case of the failure, the output file size remains 0. The command that triggers the failure involves a conversion to mpeg2 using the mpeg2video codec and occurs only with -oac copy -audiofile $file.ac3. If I replace that with -nosound, response from the application remains the same, and output is generated successfully considering the specified change. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.3, but because execution occurs successfully while using a fairly recent version, that may or may not be a contributing factor. If you're interested in more information, I'll be happy to comply. I seem to remember that a problem either similar or identical to this existed for me for a span of several releases some time ago. Thanks. On a tangential note, It also appears that at some point fairly recently an mpeg2video option for 2.35/1 aspect ratio was added. I'm pretty sure I have previously tried doing that without success, so that's why I'm mentioning it. I'm adding aspect=2.35/1 to lavcopts and crop and scale filters to the chain, typically crop=1904:800:4:138 and scale=720:304 to convert AVCHD captures. I'm assuming that I don't need multiples of 16 or 32 for the last two crop coordinates because they just specify the position where the rectangle starts, right? Laine Lee

That is, I succeded in getting the sync right with this added bonus to the process: After the reindexing command is on the way, running for even just a few seconds, I was able to kill the capturing process and get the sync right. I'm glad the compile thing is also done. It was a few weeks ago, and can't go look for the posts now.... Busy... I hope you'll be digitizing fine your tapes soon! Problem with configure script

Hello, I am trying to recompile mencoder to adjust MAX_SKEW_DELTA in stream/tvi_v4l2.c as suggested in http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-users/2010-April/079686.html but the configure script bails out with Checking for Nemesi Streaming Media libraries ... no Checking for LIVE555 Streaming Media libraries ... no Checking for FFmpeg libavutil ... Error: You need static or shared libavutil, MPlayer will not compile without! With format=i420 and without bmovl the video encodes fine and the colors are fine. I also tried with format=yv12 - again blue video.
