Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? yadif: what does "spatial interlacing check" mean?

Hi, TFM say about the 2 and 3 options for yadif that they "skip spatial interlacing check". What does this mean exactly? What's the better way to go if I want better quality regardless of encoding time? And would recommendations differ if I use yadif in connection with mcdeint? edl for transport stream

My receiver for TV programmes stores videos as transport stream. I tried cutting out scenes (e.g. commercials) using -edl - however, it seems that the transaport stream does not use seconds as time unit. Even edl scripts created via -edlout do not work - scenes cut out are different from what I selected before. Sure, I can re-encode using mencoder and do that job with the output file - in fact, this is what I am doing now. However, does anybody know how I can edit the transport stream properly ? It would spare me one long step of re-emcoding. Malte

Encoding with libx264 cuts off audio at the end

I use the latest mencoder from svn and the latest libx264 from git. When I encode a file the audio is cut off at the end. The cut off length seems to correspond to the rc-lookahead value off x264. I noticed, that at the beginning of the encoding process the time counter stand still until the framecounter has gone up to the number of frames set for rc-lookahead (+x frames, depending on the thread count as it seems), like this: $ mencoder -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts rc-lookahead=250 -o outfile.avi infile.mkv [...] Pos: 0.1s 254f (98%) 62.72fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.030 [0:0] ^^^^ ^^^^ At the the end of the encoding process there is a difference between the time counter of mencoder and the time in the stats of x264 also reflected by the differnce in Video Stream length and Audio Stream length: Pos: 21.1s 763f (99%) 2.61fps Trem: 0min 4mb A-V:-0.042 [1416:192] Flushing video frames. Writing index... Writing header... ODML: vprp aspect is 16:9. Setting audio delay to 0.048s. Video stream: 1382.578 kbit/s (172822 B/s) size: 5499792 bytes 31.823 secs 763 frames ^^^^^^ Audio stream: 192.000 kbit/s (24000 B/s) size: 519552 bytes 21.648 secs ^^^^^^ The source frame rate in the example is 23.976 fps, multiplied by the time difference its roughly 250. It seems as if at the beginning mencoder feeds frames to x264 but does not start the audio coding until the frame counter has reached the value of rc-lookahead. But when the video is fully encoded the audio encoding is stopped immediatly. When you play such a file the audio is in sync but cut off at the end. It also happens, if you do not set rc-lookahead explicitly, because the default is 40 frames. Looks like a bug to me, but maybe I am missing something. I searched the man page for something that might continue the audio encoding. I believe I have seen such an option in there a long time ago, but it might also have been the doc of another tool. I noticed that the encoded material (x264, but I am not sure that matters here) has less red in it. It seems that higher crf setting did not improve on this, and I do not want to go to the higher setting anyway, because I am happy with the size/detail otherwise. I do cropping and scaling of the 1080i source, I use the values discovered by cropdetect, I hope that is enough consideration not to mess up the colors. Could someone suggest what to tweek in this situation? Thanks, Matyas - Every hardware eventually breaks. Every software eventually works.

Converted AVI->MPG using mencoder, have no audio on DVD (authoring with dvdauthor)

Hello everyone, I'm trying to convert an AVI I have to a DVD Video. I've converted the AVI using the following command: mencoder ~/kvalim.avi -of mpeg -vf scale=720:576,harddup -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=128:vcodec=mpeg2video:keyint=25:vbitrate=5000:aspect=4/3 -mpegopts format=dvd -srate 48000 -ofps 25 -o ~/kvalim.mpg This is a PAL video, and I think the above should fit... The MPG file that is created works fine, has both video and audio and looks quite good. Then I used dvdauthor on this MPG, with the following commands: mkdir Kvalim dvdauthor -o Kvalim -t kvalim.mpg dvdauthor -o Kvalim -T mkisofs -dvd-video -o kvalim.iso Kvalim dvdauthor seems to work fine (it doesn't throw any errors or warning, unlike what happened in the last 100 times I tried to do this trick...), and the DVD is burnt... BUT when I play this DVD I only see the video, no audio at all. Note: I don't think this is a dvdauthor problem, because the VOB files it creates have sound (when I play them on my computer) Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is this some kind of bug? Can anyone help? Thanks!
