Getting bad video or crash
by Andrew Berg 12 Jun '09

12 Jun '09

I'm trying to convert a DVD, and this particular one either causes MEncoder to crash or output bad video (usually the latter). I keep getting a message (it's displayed thousands of times) that says "[mpeg2video @ 00D9A434]MPEG motion vector out of boundary" among other things when I tell it to be more verbose. I don't know exactly what it means, but it's probably the reason I can't convert. MPlayer can play it just fine, however. mencoder dvd://3 -dvd-device /j/ -endpos 90 -priority abovenormal -msglevel all=1:statusline=5 -of avi -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=21:keyint=300:keyint_min=30:level_idc=41:frameref=4:mixed_refs:weight_b:bframes=4:b_adapt=2:b_pyramid:me_ range=24:direct_pred=auto:partitions=all:cabac:8x8dct:me=hex:trellis=1:subq=5:threads=auto:nointerlaced:nopsnr:nossim -vf pp=lb,hqdn3d=7:6:3:3,harddup -o test.avi I've been doing a few DVDs with these settings, and this is the first time I've run into this kind of problem.

iMovie compatible mencoder settings for mp4
by Towncat 09 Jun '09

09 Jun '09

Hi folks, I was trying to import an mpg movie (recorded with a Sony Handycam) into iMovie '08. As it failed to do so with the original mpg file, and some googling told me that it should be compatible with mp4 files, I tried to convert the file into a QuickTime compatible .mp4 (based on the mencoder documentation's advice). Here's my small script: --- mencoder $INPUTFILE -ovc x264 -x264encopts subq=1:frameref=1:threads=4:bframes=1:pass=1:bitrate=$VBITRATE:vbv_maxrate=$VBITRATE_MAX:vbv_bufsize=5000:cabac:nofast_pskip:nodct_decimate:turbo=1 -oac faac -faacopts br=192:mpeg=4:object=2 -channels 2 -srate 48000 -vf scale=-10:-1,harddup -ofps 25 -o /dev/null mencoder $INPUTFILE -ovc x264 -x264encopts subq=6:frameref=6:partitions=all:me=umh:threads=4:bframes=1:pass=2:bitrate=$VBITRATE:vbv_maxrate=$VBITRATE_MAX:vbv_bufsize=5000:cabac:nofast_pskip:nodct_decimate:keyint=300 -oac faac -faacopts br=192:mpeg=4:object=2 -channels 2 -srate 48000 -vf scale=-10:-1,harddup -ofps 25 -idx -o tmp.$OUTPUTFILE.avi mplayer tmp.$OUTPUTFILE.avi -dumpaudio -dumpfile $OUTPUTFILE.aac mplayer tmp.$OUTPUTFILE.avi -dumpvideo -dumpfile $OUTPUTFILE.h264 mp4creator -create=$OUTPUTFILE.aac $OUTPUTFILE.mp4 mp4creator -create=$OUTPUTFILE.h264 -rate=25 $OUTPUTFILE.mp4 mp4creator -hint=1 $OUTPUTFILE.mp4 mp4creator -hint=2 $OUTPUTFILE.mp4 mp4creator -optimize $OUTPUTFILE.mp4 --- However, iMovie still says that the file is incompatible. Do you have a suggestion as to what settings to use in mencoder to create an iMovie-importable movie (without much loss of data, of course)? Thanks, tc.

mov to flv convert problem
by Taras Shkodenko 09 Jun '09

09 Jun '09

Hi, all, I`m converting mov video files to flv format using command: /usr/local/bin/mencoder "/var/www/vhosts/testdomain/subdomains/videos/httpdocs/video/test1.mov" -o "/var/www/vhosts/testdomain/subdomains/videos/httpdocs/flvideo/ test1.flv" -ovc vfw -xvfwopts codec=vp6vfw.dll:compdata=/var/www/vhosts/testdomain/subdomains/videos/httpdocs/include/firstpass1000.mcf -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64 -af lavcresample=44100 -vf scale=640:480,flip -of lavf But original mov file is longer 59 sec. than newly generated flv file 53 sec.? If somebody had the same problem and found solution, please help.

Add "-af > volnorm" to your command line. So this means I use e.g. volnorm=2:0.5 for the video with low setting and volnorm=2:0.2 for that with high volume for encoding - correct ? Adjust Audio Volumes of Videos
by Malte Schünemann 08 Jun '09

08 Jun '09

I frequently want to put several videos on one DVD. Sometimes, the audio volume settings for them differ, so one video requires me to increase the volume on my TV. When it comes to play the next video - which has a different audio volume - this is very (VERY) loud and I have to tune down quickly. How can I adjust the various Videos to get similar audio volumes ? Thanks Malte ___________________________________________________________________________ WEB.DE FreeDSL mit 6.000 Flatrate und Telefonanschluss für 17,95 Euro/mtl.! http://dsl.web.de/?ac=OM.AD.AD008K15039B7069a&mc=DSL002

Tried this with crop=... in a first test - had to run yet another run of mencoder to get the video back to 720:576 - but then the result was fine. Many thanks for suggestions. Video size

I am trying to encode videos via mencoder from ts format to avi and create a DVD from them. Technically, his is OK, but the videos show on the TV screen with black bar at top + bottom and the picture is squeezed in height. How can I change this ? My current command is mencoder -ofps 25 -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd:tsaf -vf scale=720:576,harddup -srate 48000 -af lavcresample=48000 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=9800:keyint=15:vstrict=0:acodec=ac3:abitrate=192:aspect=16/9 -ofps 25 -o <output file <input file> The original's width and height is 720 + 576 - my TV screen in a widescreen. Mencoder Missing SUbtitles
by Mick Pond 05 Jun '09

05 Jun '09

I have been having some issues encoding dvd compliant mpg files, and adding subtitles to the video (forced I can live with, but would rather optional). I am using .srt file, the process seems to complete with no errors, however it seems to just skip some of the subtitles all together. I am using mythbuntu (Jaunty), using the following command: mencoder mplex_test_before_subs.mpg -mc 0 -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=2500:ilme:ildct:acodec=ac3:abitrate=192 -msglevel all=6 -mpegopts format=dvd -sub test.srt -subfont-text-scale 2.5 -o ABC_with_Subs_2.5_test.mpg Even with the msg level set so high, there is still no error produced. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
