Muxing using ax file
by Martijn van Beurden 24 Jun '09

24 Jun '09

Hello everyone, A while ago I posted a message here to ask something about how to force mencoder to write an ODML AVI with ix## tables for use in my portable, the Sandisk Sansa Fuze. In the directory of the Sansa Media Converter (which you can download for free) on my Windows system (I use Linux mainly) I found some ax files, which are codecs AFAIK. I also found 2 files, called aviMux.dll and aviwriter.ax. Now is my question: is it somehow possible to use these to write a container? Thanks in advance! ;)

mov -> flv using ffmpeg or mencoder
by Federico Pistono 24 Jun '09

24 Jun '09

OK, this is probably a silly question, but what exactly is the difference between using ffmpeg and mencoder for creating an flv video file, say from an HD-XDCAM mov source file? >From what I understand mencoder uses more or less the same libraries as ffmpeg, but it is somehow more powerful. Can somebody explain me the differences? What should I use for making a 720p VBR FLV form an XDCAM file? reduce size of black and white videos
by Malte Schünemann 24 Jun '09

24 Jun '09

I have some black and white videos from the thirties that I want to put onto a DVD. What is the optimal encoding of these videos with respect to their size ? I want to reduce the file size without loss of quality and thought there might be some switch (e.g. special stuff for black and white) ... Which .ifo file?
by Mike Castle 23 Jun '09

23 Jun '09

As I understand it, depending on how one rips a DVD, it may be necessary to pull along a .ifo to get useful palette information. However, there are typically more than 1 .IFO file in the VIDEO_TS directory, so, which one? It's not like they match up exactly with the number of titles that have subtitles. Take this one for instance: VIDEO_TS.IFO VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_02_0.IFO VTS_03_0.IFO VTS_04_0.IFO Yet, I know that title #6 has subtitles. The examples I've seen all show using VTS_01_0.IFO, but then they also all use dvd://1. So, are we using VTS_01_0.IFO because of dvd://1 and if we used dvd://2 we should be using VTS_02_0.IFO or what? mrc

Codecs settings for home movies
by LALAUZE 20 Jun '09

20 Jun '09

Dear list, I am new to mencoder, and I would like to convert MOD files from my video camera to AVI. These files will be further edited with adobe premiere elements 7, to produce DVD movies. I do not know the codecs settings I should use for this task, and any piece advice would be much appreciated. Besides, I am looking for a good quality source of information about mencoder, targeted to users who are new to video encoding. -- Cheers, Hélène

vobsubout problem with dvdnav: doesn't appear to work
by Mike Castle 20 Jun '09

When using a command like: mencoder -quiet -vobsubout test-dvd -vobsuboutindex 0 -sid 1 -oac copy -ovc copy -o /dev/null dvd://1 I get a reasonable looking idx file: # VobSub index file, v7 (do not modify this line!) # # Generated by MPlayer SVN-r29374-4.3.3 # See <URL:http://www.mplayerhq.hu/> for more information about MPlayer # See <URL:http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=VOBsub> for more information about Vobsub # size: 720x480 palette: 101010, 808080, 808080, 808080, 808080, 808080, 808080, ebebeb, 808080, b0b0b0, 808080, 808080, 808080, 808080, 808080, 808080 # ON: displays only forced subtitles, OFF: shows everything forced subs: OFF # Language index in use langidx: 0 id: en, index: 0 But, if I use dvdnav, not so good: # VobSub index file, v7 (do not modify this line!) # # Generated by MPlayer SVN-r29374-4.3.3 # See <URL:http://www.mplayerhq.hu/> for more information about MPlayer # See <URL:http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=VOBsub> for more information about Vobsub # size: 720x480 # ON: displays only forced subtitles, OFF: shows everything forced subs: OFF # Language index in use langidx: 0 id: xx, index: 0 Note that it is missing the palette information and has the language wrong. I'm not sure if the fact that it outputted all of that stuff twice is important or not. The resulting .sub files for both runs are identical. The palette and id are the only differences in the .idx files. So, I imagine that -vobsuboutid can fix one of the problems here. But, what about the missing language? Hmmm... it seems to work correctly still, and maybe this is nothing more than a minor issue?

Need some help with ODML for Sansa Fuze
by Martijn van Beurden 18 Jun '09

18 Jun '09

Hello everyone, I'm trying to write a script that allows mencoder to make vids for my Sandisk Sansa Fuze. Currently I can only convert video's for my Sansa with the Sansa Media Converter, a converter by InterVideo which encodes in a special format, it looks like a modded AVI. I already found out how to bypass this, and my first mencoder-encoded video is already playing! The problem is that seeking is not working yet. Dumping the RIFF structure of the original mencoder-encoded file gives this: RIFF size=37536096 AVI LIST size=382 hdrl avih size=56 LIST size=192 strl strh size=56 strf size=40 vprp size=68 LIST size=106 strl strh size=56 strf size=30 LIST size=36 INFO ISFT size=24 value=MEncoder SVN-r29358-4.3 JUNK size=3642 LIST size=36943496 movi 01wb size=120 01wb size=240 01wb size=192 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=288 01wb size=240 01wb size=240 01wb size=288 01wb size=288 01wb size=240 01wb size=288 idx1 size=588496 Modded (just taking the header of the same file encoded with Sansa Media Converter) RIFF size=37655446 AVI LIST size=64648 hdrl avih size=56 LIST size=32148 strl strh size=56 strf size=40 indx size=32024 LIST size=32148 strl strh size=56 strf size=30 JUNK size=2 indx size=32024 LIST size=260 odml dmlh size=248 LIST size=24 INFO ISFT size=12 value=InterVideo LIST size=37002231 movi ix00 size=32024 ix01 size=32024 00dc size=473 01wb size=288 01wb size=288 00dc size=6 01wb size=288 01wb size=288 01wb size=240 00dc size=6 01wb size=288 01wb size=240 00dc size=6 01wb size=288 01wb size=240 00dc size=6 01wb size=240 01wb size=288 00dc size=6 idx1 size=588496 While the headers are wrong now, it just plays without much problem. There are only 2 flaws: I can't seek and the file length displayed is wrong. As you can see in this dumps, SMC adds ix00 and ix01. I believe this is for seeking. (it looks like some kind of table, and the values seem to correspond with the bitposition of the frames) Searching learned me that these ix.. tables are introduced in ODML. Is there a way to let mencoder produce this tables? Otherwise I'll have to script something to search for keyframes and building those, if thats possible. Oh, and the indx blocks in the LIST chunks seem to point to other ix00 and ix01 blocks somewhere halfway the stream... Thanks in advance!

Hey Everyone Like many of you, I would like to digitize my VHS tapes. I have found the correct mencoder command but now I am wondering if there is a way to stop the recording automatically? It would be nice to be able to start a recording and then go to bed. Thanks in advance-Patrick BTW is it pronounced M -encoder or Men-coder?

issues for time-lapse video encoding
by Hugh Secker-Walker 14 Jun '09

14 Jun '09

Hi Folks, I'm creating and processing time-lapse movies of outdoor scenes using mencoder (or ffmpeg) to do the capture from a webcam, and then mencoder to process into a playable video. I'm using an Ubuntu server setup, and the initial video comes in from a USB webcam in video4linux2 format. I'm capturing 1280x1024 frames at 0.1 frame per second, i.e. 6 frames per minute. The intended playback is 30 fps. I have two questions: 1) Since I want to use two-pass processing of the captured video, I need to do the initial capture with as little degredation as possible. I'd like e.g. 3000 frames to go into about 1gB in the oringial captured video. Is there a recommended codec/setting for this? I've tried rawvideo and ffv1, but these generate too much data. So I need some compression. Given that the size of the compressed video at this point isn't a big issue, which codec will degrade the images the least or have the simplest behavior/results? BTW, I'm currently using the mjpeg codec, but there's no control that I can see (ffmpeg) for the compression that it's doing.... 2) I want to do some filtering of the resulting video. In particular, it would be nice to remove all the objects, e.g. birds, that appear in only a single frame. I can imagine that some sort of median filter would do the job (e.g. median for each pixel across 7 frames). What should I be looking at for this kind of filtering? It's a kind of denoising, but the extent of the noisy object can be quite large, but always only for a single frame. Relatedly, is there a codec that would be best suited to the time-lapse material? I've toyed with wmv2, mpeg4, and x264 -- but experimenting with just the set of controls that I've seen mentioned in FAQs is daunting, and I haven't yet seen anything that specifically addresses the nature of time-lapse video of outdoor scenes. So, I'd also appreciate any pointers to information about the encoding issues for time-lapse video. Thanks in advance, -Hugh
