h.264 stream read with too high frame rate?
by Mikhail Ramendik 08 Oct '09

08 Oct '09

Hello, I am trying to play or reencode an h/264 stream sample, saved straight from DVB (BBC HD). It has PAFF (an earlier mplayer reported "PAFF not supported"). The video is about two times slower than the sound. In mplayer I attributed this to not enough CPU power. However, the same happens in the resulting file after a non-realtime encoding with mencoder. After reading up on PPAF, I suspect mplayer/mencoder is reading fields as frames. Is there a way to fix this? Ideally, just drop one of the fields when they are encoded separately, as I am scaling down to a lower size anyway. -- Yours, Mikhail Ramendik

Color Space Problem with a Sequence of RGB JPEG Images
by Irv Elshoff 08 Oct '09

08 Oct '09

Greeting, I'm fairly new to Mencoder and would like to create movies from a sequence of existing JPEG files. The final output is intended to be viewed by mainstream movie players such as MPlayer, QuickTime and Windows Media Player. I'm not targeting any specific "hard" output media (e.g., DVD). My problem is that the perceived colors in my input files - which look OK using every image viewer I know - are changed on output to something that does not look OK. For instance, pure white (0xFFFFFF) becomes pink (0xFF7DFF) and pure black becomes olive green (0x008700) in the output. I'm looking for command-line options to maintain the perceived colors. The JPEG images were produced by my own C++ program using the ubiquitous libjpeg "6b" library. In my output routine I set the color space to JCS_RGB because we need to retain as much information as possible (the source and most destinations are RGB-based). If I change this to JCS_YCbCr ("YUV") in a test program, Mencoder makes proper looking output, but this is not an option... My second problem is that I have more than 2 TB of existing RGB JPEG files that I want to be able to process. I can use something like ImageMagick to convert each frame to something else (e.g., uncompressed TIFF) and then make a movie from those files, but this isn't practical. ImageMagick seems to know how to deal with RGB JPEGs. I'm hoping that Mencoder can too, with the right command-line options. I've tried a bunch based on what I read from Google hits, but nothing is working for me. I'd really appreciate any help you can give. If needed, I can supply a simple (single source file, GNU) C++ program to generate the synthetic test images, the test images themselves, single-frame mencoded movies (that demonstrate the problem), and whatever else is relevant. For the record, the mencoder command line I'm using is: /opt/mplayer/bin/mencoder \ mf://input.jpg \ -mf fps=5 \ -ovc lavc \ -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell \ -of lavf \ -lavfopts format=mov \ -o output.mov I work on Linux and Mac. I've got Windows XP if needed. Cheers, Irv.

I don't think it's upconverted. There is a noticeable difference between this show, which is broadcast in 1080i and Smackdown (another WWE show), which is broadcast in 720p (all WWE shows are recorded in 1080i). It didn't take me long to realize that pro wrestling shows (especially with lots of pyro and lighting effects) need a lot of bits, and WWE shows almost never get enough when broadcast, which means softness and artifacts. It's particularly noticeable during wrestler entrances (some are so bad, the wrestler's face is blurred out). It's also obvious in their DVDs - they use the maximum bitrate and still many look bad (and I've haven't seen /any/ without obvious artifacting).

HD-PVR video conversion

I have tried several things, and none have worked (only proprietary decoders can handle its 1080i video it seems). I've tried using AviSynth scripts, but they either end up out of sync (using a graph) or don't use the right decoder (using DirectShowSource; it doesn't honor the merit system and uses FFmpeg no matter what). Perhaps you could point me in the right direction. I'm going a bit nuts trying to figure out how to convert these videos.

Hello, Can you help me? Thanks for suggestion ... yes I could use the 2nd channel (I think I already described that in my original posting) - my thinking was that I might end up with higher quality by conversion of the HD stream. simple edl not working?
by Mikhail Ramendik 03 Oct '09

03 Oct '09

Hello, I have Debian lenny, and mplayer and mencoder from debian-multimedia.org. MEncoder version is dev-SVN-r26940 . I am trying to do some simple skipping (based on output of comskip, ran under wine). The contents of the file "c.edl" are: 0.00 1.72 0 148.64 348.60 0 842.08 1073.24 0 The command line I use is: mencoder c.ts -edl c.edl -oac copy -ovc copy -of mpeg -o c.mpg I get no error messages, and mencoder does output "Read 3 EDL actions". However, the resultig video is nearly an exact copy of the original, except for a format change (TS to MPG). Only the first specified piece (0.00 to 1.72) is skipped. And if I delete that line, nothing at all is skipped. What should I do to fix this and make mencoder skip the specified parts? -- Yours, Mikhail Ramendik
