Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? yadif: what does "spatial interlacing check" mean?

Hi, TFM say about the 2 and 3 options for yadif that they "skip spatial interlacing check". What does this mean exactly? What's the better way to go if I want better quality regardless of encoding time? And would recommendations differ if I use yadif in connection with mcdeint? Any suggestions or link pointers on how to get around losing audio sync during video capture? Sound is lagging by at least 0.5s within 60s of playback. Should I be trying to "fix" the above command line or trying some other codec? Do I need a better capture card? Ideally I'd like the output file to be in DV for editing in kino but I can't get past the problem of two streams being required. Googling for dv encoding points to using -tv options such as amode=1, forceaudio etc. but mencoder, despite having amode and forceaudio in the man page mencoder insists it doesn't understand those options. edl for transport stream

My receiver for TV programmes stores videos as transport stream. I tried cutting out scenes (e.g. commercials) using -edl - however, it seems that the transaport stream does not use seconds as time unit. Even edl scripts created via -edlout do not work - scenes cut out are different from what I selected before. Sure, I can re-encode using mencoder and do that job with the output file - in fact, this is what I am doing now. However, does anybody know how I can edit the transport stream properly ? It would spare me one long step of re-emcoding. Malte

No video problem with Mencoder

Hi all, I'm trying to convert videos to flv using mencoder but I keep getting a video file with sound but no video. I'm a newbie with mencoder so not sure if it's to do with my command options. I'm using mencoder svn r29355 and running on windows xp. mencoder to generate mp4 files for Motorola A1200

Hello. I am trying to convert DVD to be playable on Motorola A1200. A1200 can see the video format: default support RM, 3gp, MP4. According to the spec, MPEG4 video files： can support 320 to X240, 30fps, 350kbps. 3GP and rm video file to support the 320 X240, 15fps, 350kbps. It is not possible to generate 3GP at 320 x 240 because, according to: http://www-mobile.ecs.soton.ac.uk/peter/h263/h263.html This resolution is not acceptable to 3gp format. Closets would be 176x144, which is too small for subtitle which is part of the video stream (not separate). For MPEG4 I tried a lot of combinations which usually ends up the REALONE player in the mobile phone complaining not able to find plug-in. I was wondering if there is a shortcut than try-and-error because for number of options to tweak it seems too much work to do try-and-error. Or is there a command-line to generate most-likely-playable content that I can simply borrow by copy and pasting? Best regards Zhang Weiwu

crop, filmdint vs. filmdint=crop (or filmdint, crop)

I am attempting to transcode some ATSC MPEG-2 captures that have extra non-video data in the top eight lines (the original streams are 1920x1088 pixels). These video streams are also very frequently hybrid interlace/telecined content and the original streams include MPEG-2 field flags. If I crop and detelecine/deinterlace using -vf crop=1920:1080:0:8,filmdint, I get a clean picture but very bad motion with speedups and slowdowns because the crop appears to have stomped on the MPEG-2 field flags that filmdint wants to see to do a good job on mixed content. If I use put filmdint first and use its built-in crop (or if I follow filmdint with crop) using -vf filmdint=crop=1920:1080:0:8, I get smooth output (for the 24fps parts at least, which is what I want), but I get green and purple chroma artifacts at the top of the video frame, presumably from the influence of the data that has been cropped. (These same chroma artifacts appear just below the lines I want to crop if the crop option is left out.) Is there an alternative way to do this that will allow filmdint to see the field flags, but to also crop the frames without artifacts? Thanks. -jrs

This is my first time using a mailing list, so please go easy on me. I'm having a problem and I've googled everywhere for a solution and found tons of relevant searches, but no answer. I have VERY little experience with digital video stuff, MEncoder specifically, but I'm trying to learn it. I am trying to convert .TS HDTV video from my tuner card to Xvid x.264. This is the command that I entered in MEncoder: mencoder -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts bitrate=1500 -o e:\output.avi e:\video.ts -vf scale=640:360 -edl e:\video.edl I'm using an edl exported from comskip, but I get this problem without using comskip or the edl flag, as well. The video file I'm using is straight from WinTV and a Haumppauge HVR-1600 card (Clear Qam HD). The video file is 13.4GB and as you can see, it crashed at 43%. Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated (or if you have recommendations on what script to use for a good picture quality (HD 264).) As I said, I've very new at this so I've only barely put together enough to type that command for myself. I'm not sure if there is a logfile that I can send that would help to determine the problem. I was also looking for information on how to get MPlayer to show the time code on the footage (not 0 when the video starts, but whatever the footage uses since it's HD and it works off of another time code system (from what little I've read from trying to google the subject.)
