Hi, I'm trying to encode my files on Windows using: mencoder input_file.wmv -really-quiet -nosound -ovc raw -vf scale=640:480,format=i420 -of rawvideo -o - | x264.exe -o output.h264 --bitrate 500 --thread-input --threads auto --progress - 640x480 This works perfectly for some formats but when I tried to use that for some WMV I got a strange result. The video is encoded but it's spilt in two halves. So I don't think the problem is the decoding of the source. Could it be some limitations in using pipes under Windows. I was able to encode the same file under Linux using named pipes (mkfifo). Thanks for any tips on that bye

x264 Color Banding

What x264 encoding setting can I use to reduce or eliminate some subtle color banding I am seeing in my output? Here are my current settings: -x264encopts qp=17:bframes=4:partitions=all:me=umh:nocabac:nofast_pskip:nodct_decimate:frameref=6:subq=6:mixed_refs:level_idc=31:threads=auto I'm resizing video from 1920:1088 down to 1280:720 Speed of encoding is really of no concern - I am more concerned with preserving detail and smoothness of gradients. If this were Photoshop and I was having trouble with banding in gradients on resizing a picture, I'd add a low level amount of noise to the image before scaling it down. I'm pretty sure that's a bad idea in video. ;)

MPEG2 aspect 2 or 3

Dear List, Running mencoder it writes some information to the screen. There is one like: „VIDEO: MPEG2 720x576 (aspect 3) 25.000 fps …" ... or ... „VIDEO: MPEG2 720x576 (aspect 2) 25.000 fps …" Can somebody explain what is the difference? Is it the DAR flag (anamorphic scaling)? I suppouse aspect 3 can be the 16:9 DAR flag. Am I right? Thanx!

Encodes for slow laptop

Hello, I want to thank you all ahead of time for being here and for working hard to create not only the best encoding tool I've ever used, but the great community support for said tool. The Free Software movement is all about people power, and you all make it possible. Thank you. So my question is this: I got one of those neato XO Laptops from the One Laptop Per Child group and I've replaced the standard OS with Ubuntu, and I've been shocked to realize that such a slow laptop has the ability to play movies. This is great, and I've decided to encode my sizeable DVD collection in such a way that they are all playable on the laptop. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time getting really consistant results. Mostly my problem is that I can't keep audio sync. I've done a number of different things on the player side, but my number one concern is the encoding. First off: what is the best codec to use on a slow system given DVD input for consistantly smooth playback and as good a picture quality as I can get? I tried h264, but that turned out to be way too slow (or was I using it wrong?) Mainly I've been trying to use XviD, but is there something else that would be better in this circumstance? My second question is: what are the factors that go in to fast video playback? I've been messing a lot with the resolution and the bitrate, but that doesn't seem to have much effect? Does the container matter much? Are there encoder specific settings I should be looking into? Finally, I wanted to know about resolutions. I've been reading conflicting things about resizing. My instinct is to always crop as little as possible and then resize to mod16, but I've recently been reading that it's a bad idea to resize at all. Hi all! Here's a little version update. Changes between v1.1.4 and v1.1.5: - Add $MP4BOX_IPOD to set whether "MP4Box -ipod ..." is run - Add possibility to renice the script (alter its priority) - use "-oac pcm" instead of "-oac copy"; it does add a little overhead (and we need more drive space) but it helps keeping audio and video in sync; also some audio codecs cannot be muxed into AVI, e.g. Vorbis, so now we're working around this issue Most people won't know the script so I'll summarize what it's about: I wrote it to spare myself having to type the same commands over and over again. It uses e.g. mencoder and MP4Box to create X264/AAC-LC files and wrap them in MP4. Simply run it on multiple input files at once and wait for the MP4s to pop up. Initially it was meant to be run on AVI files only but today it has very few limitations regarding the input, it can even assist ripping DVDs. If you're interested read the script's comments and give it a spin. The dump itself works fine in mplayer, if I try to use it for dvd creation in dvdstyler I get an error that no valid header is found. So I ran again my ovc/oac copy command, the result is the same there is a delay - but the file plays fine in mplayer and can be used with dvdstyler. Can I consider this to be a bug of mencoder? libdvdread 0.97 and libdvdnav under MinGW

Hello All Are there are guides for building libdvdread and libdvdnav under MinGW, so I can then build mencoder/mplayer to use mingw or if anyone has a precompiled (late svn) binary of mencoder/mplayer with DVDNAV support, that would be appreciated. -ss seek position?

Hi all! I'm haveing a problem getting mencoder to recognise the -ss parameter. I'm using XP sp2 and the string I'm using is: mencoder -ss 00:00:00 -endpos 00:00:05 -nosound -ovc copy SOURCE_FILE.mpg -of mpeg -o OUT_FILE.mpg The behavior is quite odd. With start / stop :00/:05 mencoder returns 5.005 secs and 150 frames writtenm, :01/:05 returns the same 5.005 secs and 150 frames, :02/:05 returns 4.505 secs and 135 frames, :03/:05 returns 3.505 secs and 105 frames, :04/:05 returns 3.003 secs and 90 frames and :05/:05 returns 2.002 secs and 60 frames. My .mpg test clip is only 6 seconds but I have tried longer clips. I've also tried it with a different mpeg, a mpeg encoded avi and a dv encoded .mov . They all exhibit really strange behavior though a couple times things did seem to go right ( the number of frames were correct - i just watched the console output) but I could not duplicate it. I've tried this out on 4 different computers and am having no luck. I appreciate any help that can be offered. video errors mpeg copy

Hello, i'm using mencoder to cut an mpeg movie. Mostly it is working fine with this command : mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd -ss 10.0 -endpos 10.0 source_file -forceidx -o target_file But sometimes the picture gets lots of distortions (nearly the whole picture is green).
