Hi, For 6 months or so I've been using the lavcopts in the command below to make rather nice quality H.264 video. Recently, after the update from Ubuntu Gusty to Hardy broke mencoder, I recompiled libx264 and mplayer/mencoder and the files produced are about half the size that they used to be. Previously mencoder produced H.264 at about 760 Mbps, now it creates H.264 at about 360 Mbps. To my eyes I feel that the quality has reduced, but I thought that setting vq* to 2 should give me a constant quality. It might be that, since I know the files are smaller I think the quality is worse - us humans are odd like that - but I'm wondering if I've overlooked a change in the last few months that would mean my lavcopts less than optimal. WMV to FLV Question

I am trying to build a high quality video hosting site and are having issues with WMV3 and a few other file types. The script I purchased uses the below commands to encode the videos, but from reading here I know that there are changes I need to make to suit my needs - I am just not sure what changes. The biggest problem right now is the laggy playback of encoded WMV files. >From reading here it appears that I need to control the frames per second down to 25 on encoding this file type, but I cant seem to figure out how. Charles, I did do a search on here and never found a definitive answer. It seems that what I need to do is adjust my converting command to limit WMV files to 25fps. I just am not sure how or what the best way to do this is. Reading through other post on here I see quite a few conversations but never any real agreed upon answer. Here is the command for decoding and encoding that we are currently using. Help with mencoder/mplayer not reading AVS source properly??

I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out why mplayer/mencoder detects that an avs (Avisynth Script) file source is yv12 rather than rbg32 (or rgb24 for that matter). I'm frameserving from premiere in rgb32 using DebugMode's Frameserver. ffmpeg detects the source fine as rgb32, but mplayer/mencoder says yv12. The result is that mencoder encodes the file with distorted color values from the avisynth source. If however, I make an intermediate file from ffmpeg or from premiere as Huffyuv or uncompressed the result is better/normal and the colors are more accurate. This is my real reason for concern. If I'm getting better results making an intermediate file, I'm going to have to go that route but if anyone has any other ideas, please share. Is this a bug in mplayer/mencoder? I've tried various ways of forcing mencoder/mplayer (-demuxer rawvideo -rawvideo format:rgb32, etc.) but it exits early with : Frame too small! (26<3686400) Wrong format? Also a quick test with mplayer vs ffplay shows that mplayer's output has banding where the ffplay output does not. (if this proves anything, I'm not sure). **Note that my test video is a misty scene where there is a slow gradient. Distributed transcoding

Hi, as I have explained in a previous post to this mailing list I'm trying to transcode my video file in a distributed way! This is my code so far: #Splitting the file input=$1 mencoder $input -oac lavc -o geluid.mp3 mencoder -endpos 00:00:06 -ovc copy -oac copy $input -o first_half mencoder -ss 0:00:06 -oac copy -ovc copy $input -o second_half #Transcoding the file mencoder first_half -ovc lavc -oac lavc -o first_half.avi mencoder second_half -ovc lavc -oac lavc -o second_half.avi rm first_half rm second_half mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy first_half.avi second_half.avi -o transcoded.avi mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -audiofile geluid.mp3 transcoded.avi -o output.avi But I get very strange things with this. When playing with VLC it is totaly corrupted and when playing it with Mplayer I get a file with sync (at first) all right but the transcoding of the first part is very poor (though the first_half.avi is completely correct). What am I doing wrong?

MPEG-2: vrc_minrate and vqmin / lmin

I was getting many distracting blocking artifacts in some of the MPEG-2 videos I was encoding that contained detailed gradients and set out to atleast minimize the problem. I created a decent RGB radial gradient PNG using Flash; to use as a testing video. I was able to determine that if I lowered vqmin and lmin to 1 AND set vrc_minrate=1 (or anything above 0), I was able to remove the blocking. I also set dc=10 because if I left the default, the encoded video would contain small pulsating black blocks. If I don't set vrc_minrate to higher than 0, the blocks still appear. Here's an example command line: * Note I blew up the bitrate to ensure I would have more than enough to spare. mencoder -sws 9 -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=mpeg2:muxrate=18080:tsaf -vf/ harddup -srate 48000 -af lavcresample=48000:0:2 -lavcopts / vcodec=mpeg2video:vrc_buf_size=3835:vrc_minrate=1:vrc_maxrate=18000:vbitrate=14000:trell:mbd=2:/ preme=2:dia=4:predia=4:precmp=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:cbp:mv0:acodec=ac3:abitrate=224:keyint=12:/ vqmin=1:lmin=1:dc=10:vstrict=0:vpass=1:aspect=16/9 -ofps 24 export.avs -o banding.mpg However, if I set the min_rate above 0, I get this message: [mpeg2video @ 00D85BA0]Warning min_rate > 0 but min_rate != max_rate isn't recom mended! 1. Why isn't this recommended? 2. Any ideas why vqmin=1 and lmin=1 don't remove the blocking unless I include the vrc_minrate >0?? What is actually going on? 3. In the man, it says vqmin=1 is "Not recommended (much larger file, little quality difference and weird side effects: msmpeg4, h263 will be very low quality, ratecontrol will be confused resulting in lower quality and some decoders will not be able to decode it)." What are these weird side effects? Does MPEG-2 video suffer from these side effects?? Or DVD compliant MPEG-2 video? In this test, I've only noticed better quality with vqmin=1 with mpeg2video. 4. In the man, it says that "Lowering lmin will make lavc more likely to choose lower quantizers for some frames, but not lower than the value of vqmin." If this is the case, why does the man say that lmin can == 0.01 when vqmin can't go lower than 1. 5. Are all of the options that are noted with (pass 1/2) in the man disabled if you include them in the second pass? Or can they be detrimental if you include them on a second pass? NTSC DVD ripping - inverse telecine artifacts

Hello, I bought some DVDs of my favorite anime but I experience problems encoding them. It is an NTSC Mixed progressive and telecine video (mplayer switches back and forth between "30000/1001 fps NTSC" and "24000/1001 fps"). The encoder did a great job and got this result: http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/3430/mencoder2lx7.jpg I don't think this encoder used the same source as mine, but I'd like to get some advice from experienced encoders to help me fix my problem and get a similar quality.
