Adjusting audio in and concatenating MPEG1 files
by Joe Emenaker 13 Mar '08

13 Mar '08

I've got a bunch of MPEG1 (fairly close to VCD format) files that I'm trying to put on my iPod. I'd use mencoder to do this, but the one that comes with Debian has some critical piece missing (I think it's AAC missing from ffmpeg, but I don't remember exactly). So, I decided to do the conversion with Nero Recode... which ain't so bad because it does auto-cropping, interlace detection, and makes a pretty good estimation of how good the source quality is so that it doesn't try to waste space with an unnecessarily high bitrate. The *problem* I'm having is that I want concatenate several of the files and also normalize the audio. So, I tried mencoder -af volnorm=1 -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=160 -ovc copy -mpegopts format=dvd:tsaf -of mpeg -o "$base.mpg" $sources (the "dvd:tsaf" is a hold-over from when I was trying to concatenate several dvd titles together into one and was getting muxer underflow or overflow errors) Anyway, this was giving me some weird video artifacting which (due to my previous hassles with "dvd:tsaf") I figured was something the muxer didn't like about the new size of the audio, so I decided to just spend the extra CPU and have mencoder process everything... mencoder -af volnorm=1 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lameopts abr:br=160 -of avi -lavcopts vbitrate=800:vcodec=mpeg4 -o "$base.avi" $sources but this is giving me lipsync problems. And the sync seems to be present early on even in the video that came from the first source file in the sequence. (In other words, if I were joining a bunch of 5-minute videos, the sync happens well before the 5-minute point where the next video would kick in). Here are the vitals of the source material: ID_VIDEO_ID=0 ID_AUDIO_ID=0 MPEG-PS file format detected. VIDEO: MPEG1 352x240 (aspect 12) 29.970 fps 1319.2 kbps (164.9 kbyte/s) ID_FILENAME=K_0100.MPG ID_DEMUXER=mpegps ID_VIDEO_FORMAT=0x10000001 ID_VIDEO_BITRATE=1319200 ID_VIDEO_WIDTH=352 ID_VIDEO_HEIGHT=240 ID_VIDEO_FPS=29.970 ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=0.0000 ID_AUDIO_FORMAT=80 ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=0 ID_AUDIO_RATE=0 ID_AUDIO_NCH=0 ID_LENGTH=363.46 Any guru's want to give me the magic incantation to normalize/join them without introducing lipsync? - Joe

High quality encoding of anime and broken mencoder options
by Jorge Peixoto de Morais Neto 12 Mar '08

12 Mar '08

Hi. I seek high quality encoding of anime. I have tested many encoding options, always with vcodec=mpeg4 and 2-pass encoding. I have found that even with vbitrate, the actual bitrate depends on the options used. Therefore, to keep the comparison fair, I have measured encoding quality by Q=PSNR/bitrate, with bitrate in Mbits/s. The test source is a 105 MB avi file with FFV1 video and no audio. The video is 1201 576x432 frames at 25fps. Some of my results: Very fast: time mencoder -o result.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:psnr:vbitrate=512:vpass=2 testsource.avi Video stream: 538.354 kbit/s (67294 B/s) size: 3232815 bytes 48.040 secs 1201 frames PSNR: Y:33.86, Cb:37.82, Cr:37.20, All:34.77 real 0m30.771s user 0m27.979s sys 0m0.608s u+s=28.587, fps=42.01, PSNR/bitrate=64.59 High quality: time mencoder -o result.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:psnr:vbitrate=512:keyint=300:vmax_b_frames=2:vb_strategy=1:b_sensitivity=10:trell:v4mv:mbd=2:vpass=2 testsource.avi Video stream: 510.746 kbit/s (63843 B/s) size: 3067029 bytes 48.040 secs 1201 frames PSNR: Y:34.89, Cb:38.66, Cr:38.03, All:35.77 real 0m44.823s user 0m41.348s sys 0m0.788s u+s=42.136, fps=28.5, PSNR/bitrate=70 Excellent quality: time mencoder -ovc lavc -o result.avi -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:psnr:vbitrate=512:mbd=2:mv0:trell:v4mv:cbp:last_pred=3:predia=3:dia=3:vmax_b_frames=2:vb_strategy=1:b_sensitivity=10:mbcmp=2:qpel:preme=2:keyint=300:vpass=2 testsource.avi Video stream: 498.805 kbit/s (62350 B/s) size: 2995322 bytes 48.040 secs 1201 frames PSNR: Y:35.48, Cb:38.85, Cr:38.26, All:36.28 real 1m32.845s user 1m30.364s sys 0m0.943s u+s=91.307, fps=13.15, PSNR/bitrate=72.73 Now, 1) Do you think the above settings are wise? Any suggestions? 2) When reencoding a movie with slight compression artifacts, should I use -vf pp=ac? Note that I will use it when reproducing anyway; I am asking if I should also use it during encoding. 3) The option vrc_override should be useful, but does not work. That should be added to the documentation. Thank you for your attention! -- Software is like sex: it is better when it is free. --Linus Torvalds

Converting vob to avi
by Mike Adolf 10 Mar '08

10 Mar '08

Greetings, I just had some 8mm film converted to dvd. I want to edit this video after converting to avi. I thought it would be easy. To a video-beginner it seems very difficult. I tried to pull it from the documentation but got lost. All I want to do is convert vob (no audio) to avi (no audio). Has anyone done this and can help. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 and using MEncoder 2:1.0~rc1-0ubuntu13.1. Mike

H.264 Encoding for AppleTV
by Derek Newton 09 Mar '08

09 Mar '08

All, I've searched around and haven't been able to find an answer on this, so I would definitely appreciate any help that you could give to me. I'm trying to use mencoder to covert dvr-ms files to .mp4 files and I'm able to import them into iTunes and play them from within iTunes. Unfortunately, when I go to sync to my AppleTV, iTunes says that it is unable to sync the video to the AppleTV as it is unable to play on the AppleTV. Am I missing something? This is the mencoder profile that I'm using: profile-desc="H.264 Apple Compatible (No Resize)" vf=pullup,softskip,pp=fd,scale=:-2,hqdn3d,harddup lavdopts=threads=2 ovc=x264=yes x264encopts=threads=auto:subq=5:frameref=4:me=umh:partitions=all:b-pyramid=yes:qcomp= 0.8:trellis=1:nocabac=yes:level_idc=13:bitrate=1200 oac=faac=yes faacopts=br=192:raw=yes:mpeg=4:tns=yes:object=2 af=volnorm=2 of=lavf=yes lavfopts=format=mp4 Thanks in advance for your help! -Derek

How to rip only the sound part of a video file?
by Shriramana Sharma 09 Mar '08

09 Mar '08

Hello. I am new to mencoder so please be patient with me. I have read the following FAQ: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/faq.html#id2555924 How can I encode an audio only file? but I don't have any aconvert command on my Ubuntu system. Also, while trying: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/faq.html#id2555742 How do I encode only sound from a music video? If I try: mplayer -ao pcm:file=encode movie-part-1.mpeg & flac -8 encode movie-part-1.flac.audioonly I get the following error: mplayer: could not connect to socket mplayer: No such file or directory though I have created the pipe called encode. Then I tried two shells, one writing to the pipe without the & and another reading from the pipe. Then it worked to an extent, but I then got the following unexpected error on the mplayer side: Forced audio codec: mad Opening audio decoder: [libmad] libmad mpeg audio decoder AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 224.0 kbit/15.87% (ratio: 28000->176400) Selected audio codec: [mad] afm: libmad (libMAD MPEG layer 1-2-3) ... ... ... Next step for taking 1280X720 60p mpeg2 to standard DVD
by Laine Lee 07 Mar '08

07 Mar '08

I got answers that helped me get 24 fps mpeg2 files from my 60p sources, so thanks for that. I ended up using decimate with these values: 2:1192:.2:4096. That resulted in frame for frame conversion except for passages of extremely low light and motion, and in those cases only 1 of every 6 frames was a duplicate, but it's pretty hard to notice. Also, I have found only a few short passages that triggered that condition. But I tried to use dvdauthor to make a VIDEO_TS folder and although the process completed successfully, I wasn't able to find a way to play the output successfully. So I tried applying "telecine" after "dvd:tsaf" for mpeg options of "-of mpeg" and was able to get a playable VIDEO_TS folder, but still had problems on standalone players such as random dropping of frames and garbled scanning (which were not present when the content was played back in mplayer). Can you suggest a method for creating dvd-compatible output using the 24 fps sources? Thanks. -- Laine Lee

A set of RM file can't be converted
by Chao Xu 05 Mar '08

05 Mar '08

All the RM videos from aduni.org doesn't work Here is a test file ftp://ftp.aduni.org/videos/ShaiLecture.rm (20MB) when I run it, it tells me "Video Stream is mandatory" I used rmfix to check up on that file, it shows it doesn't implement a video stream. It's strange, Real Alternative can decode the video fine. Since Real Alternative can play the file, there must be a way for Mencoder to convert it too, right?
