divx2pass.log always disappearing
by Philippe MONROUX 21 Mar '08

21 Mar '08

Hello, When I enter the command : mencoder -aid 129 -oac copy -vf crop=704:560:8:6,hqdn3d=2:1:2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=760:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:autoaspect:vpass=1 film.vob -o /dev/null there is a divx2pass.log file at beginning but it always disappear when it is achieved. same behavior when I add -passlogfile pass1stats.log or -o film.avi So I can't make the second pass... 2pass failed: filename=divx2pass.log FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver. or 2pass failed: filename=pass1stats.log FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver. What's the pb ? Regards -- Philippe MONROUX http://perso.orange.fr/zygomaths/

Hello I have a soundtrack on a CDROM. I also have a mpeg2 movie on my HD. I want to grab the soundtrack from a CDROM and attach it to my mpeg2 movie. To be clear I want to do the following 2 steps: 1. grab a soundtrack from CDROM 2. replace the mpeg2 soundtrack with this one grabed from CDROM. How can I perform those 2 steps with mencoder ? thank You for help --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Suggestions for auto-crop-detect methods?
by François Dermu 20 Mar '08

20 Mar '08

Nice script RC, It got me thinking about new ways to detect cropping values. Here is my "enhanced" version of your script It will still take spots in the video but will do so according to the video length (and not just every 35 sec) and will take 20 spots rather than 10 (just to be sure) I also increased the cropping threshold (I'd rather crop a little too much than not enough) It dumps the output in /tmp/mplayer.log instead of ./mplayer.log in case you don't have write access in the current directory. It uses "-vo null" rather than "-vo md5sum". (why ask your cpu extra and unnecessary work ;) ) It would skip empty crop result if any it will also print out the 20 spot results and playback the video with a rectangle showing the crop values that have been detected (in debug mode) And it can also take multiple files in parameter. enjoy ;) -- -= Francois Dermu =- more info at: http://dermu.free.fr

Broken AVIs???
by Emery Guevremont 18 Mar '08

18 Mar '08

Hello everyone, I'm having a problem converting mpeg2 files to mpeg4 (xvid and divx). For some unknown reason when the output AVI is bigger then 1 GB (well around that size), my dvd player (a Philips-dvp5960 mpeg4 capable) and my archos 605 player (4GB model) won't play the AVI pass the the 2h and 15min mark (which is usually when the file being played goes pass the 1GB mark). But both device won't stop at the same point. On my Philips DVD player, my avi will stop working if I fast forward or rewind my video pass the 1h45min (not exact time, it varies) mark. If I rewind before 1h45min, the video plays as normal. What I mean by stop working is that the audio goes out of sync, but completly out of sync. The video will play as usual, but the audio being played is the one from the being of the movie. So you can say the audio is out of sync by 1hr and 45 min. If I fast forward pass the 2h15min, the dvd player freezes. As for the Archos, the symptons are different. For example if I have a 3 hr long movie that's about 1.5 GB in size, my archos will only play 2h15min of the movie and thats it, movie over. At the begin of the movie, my archos will display the movie length to be 3hrs, but as soon as I fast forward or rewind, it will refresh the movie length to around 2h15min. BTW I have no problem playing the movies or videos with my computer (Windows media player). At this point I have no idea what could be causing the problem and even less, what tools I can use to debug or verify my avi files. So far the only tools I've used are gspot and the command "file" in linux. Besides that, I've also used another encoder to convert my mpeg2 (www.pocketdivxencoder.net) and had no problem playing file well over 1 GB. So the problem seems to only be with mencoder. Here's my system: Gentoo Kernel 2.6.23-gentoo-r3 ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20070616 mplayer-1.0_rc2_p25993 xvid-1.1.3 MEncoder dev-SVN-rUNKNOWN-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2008 MPlayer Team CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1700+ (Family: 6, Model: 6, Stepping: 2) CPUflags: Type: 6 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0 Compiled with runtime CPU detection. h264 (and help with encoding) or divx
by Alex Samad 17 Mar '08

17 Mar '08

Hi I am in the process of processing my video camera footage I have taken. I was hoping to go to h264, but testing the resultant files on my xbox (xbmc), it is very choppy, it can't seem to keep up (also encoding sound to aac). So I am thinking to either go back to encoding with divx or buy an xbox360 ? I would like to stay with h264 it saves a lot of space. My other problem with x264 is I get boxy area's when the back ground is a wall, with a visible light gradient (you can see it get darker the further away it is). This looks okay in the original format, but when encoded with x264 it goes all blocky and not smooth at all these are the flags I am using H264COMMON=":frameref=4:mixed_refs:bframes=16:b_adapt:b_pyramid:weight_b:bime:direct_pred=auto:me=umh:me_range=24:subq=7:brdo:chroma_me:trellis=1:cabac:deblock:8x8dct:partitions=p8x8,b8x8,i8x8,i4x4:nofast_pskip:nodct_decimate:threads=auto:keyint=250:qp_min=10:qp_max=51:ip_factor=1.4:pb_factor=1.3:qcomp=0.6:qblur=0.5:chroma_qp_offset=0" ENC1="x264 -x264encopts pass=1:crf=18:turbo$H264COMMON" ENC2="x264 -x264encopts pass=3:bitrate=$BITRATE$H264COMMON" AENC="-af volnorm=1" FILTER1="" FILTER2="-vf spp,hqdn3d=2:1:2" AUDIO="-oac faac -faacopts object=1:tns:quality=300:mpeg=4" ASPECT="-aspect 16:9" ADDOPT= echo "Video Pass 1/3" nice mencoder $QUIET \ $ASPECT \ -alang en\ $FILTER1 \ -ovc $ENC1 \ -nosound \ -passlogfile "$PASSLOG" \ -o /dev/null \ "$INFILE" $ADDOPT echo "Video & Audio Pass 2/3" nice mencoder $QUIET \ $ASPECT \ -alang en\ $FILTER2 \ $AENC \ -ovc $ENC2 \ -passlogfile "$PASSLOG" \ $AUDIO \ -o "$AVIFILE" \ "$INFILE" $ADDOPT echo "Video & Audio Pass 3/3" nice mencoder $QUIET \ $ASPECT \ -alang en\ $FILTER2 \ $AENC \ -ovc $ENC2 \ -passlogfile "$PASSLOG" \ $AUDIO \ -o "$AVIFILE" \ "$INFILE" $ADDOPT echo "Extract Video" nice MP4Box -aviraw video "$AVIFILE" > "$WRKDIR/aviraw_video.out" & WAITPD="$!" # Extracts to ${BFILE}_audio.raw echo "Extract Audio" nice MP4Box -aviraw audio "$AVIFILE" > "$WRKDIR/aviraw_audio.out" & WAITPD="$WAITPD $!" wait $WAITPD mv $SNDFILERAW $SNDFILEAAC echo "Make mp4" MP4Box -add "$VIDFILERAW" -add "$SNDFILEAAC" -fps 25 -new "${OUTFILE}" > "$WRKDIR/MP4Box.out" What can I do to smooth out these ares with out loosing too much definition in the for ground. Also how can I use mplayer (or mencoder) to output to a jpg a specific frame (or time reference) so I can give examples Thanks - "The march to war affected the people's confidence. How much filtering before low-bitrate H.264
by Jorge Peixoto de Morais Neto 17 Mar '08

17 Mar '08

Hi. I decided for H.264 for my low-bitrate anime compression. I want the bitrate below 400 kbits/s. I want the image as detailed, sharp, correct as possible. I want text to be readable. To look aesthetically good is less important. I decided for constant-quality encoding (maybe crf=32). The video is 576x432 25 fps anime. It was compressed with Xvid and has small but visible compression artifacts. Does this mean I should filter the video before encoding? Which is true: A) I should filter to reduce noise, to avoid wasting bits encoding noise. Then mencoder can put the bits where they are really needed. B) I should not filter, because I am encoding to a quite low bitrate that will introduce serious compression artifacts anyway. In this case, the noise will be the first thing discarded by the lossy compression. It is pointless to artificially remove noise beforehand. Filtering would destroy detail and achieve nothing. If A is true, then should I use nr, hqdn3d, pp=ac or what? Maybe both pp=ac and hqdn3d? To decide, I have made some tests with the following method: I encode the movie at two qualities next to the one I want (in this case, crf=33 and crf=32). Then, assuming that the PSNR is a linear function of log(bitrate) (1), I extrapolate to find the bitrate needed for a given PSNR. All tests had the common options -ovc x264 -x264encopts psnr:subq=5:8x8dct:frameref=2:bframes=3:b_pyramid:weight_b:keyint=512 Some of my results with a 48 second clip: No filtering: crf=32: bitrate 420.72 PSNR 35.909 in 61.3s crf=33: bitrate 377.94 PSNR 35.301 in 60.312s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 391.44 -x264encopts nr=150 crf=32: bitrate 416.35 PSNR 35.866 in 62.225s crf=33: bitrate 374.21 PSNR 35.262 in 61.585s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 390.28 -vf pp=ac crf=32: bitrate 372.89 PSNR 35.826 in 61.586s crf=33: bitrate 335.62 PSNR 35.186 in 60.221s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 353.42 -vf hqdn3d crf=32: bitrate 406.52 PSNR 36.049 in 69.064s crf=33: bitrate 366.34 PSNR 35.425 in 68.185s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 370.95 -vf pp=ac,hqdn3d crf=32: bitrate 381.51 PSNR 36.157 in 70.946s crf=33: bitrate 343.73 PSNR 35.52 in 69.888s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 342.61 -vf hqdn3d,pp=ac crf=32: bitrate 400.37 PSNR 36.121 in 71.455s crf=33: bitrate 360.92 PSNR 35.488 in 70.5s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 361.63 -vf pp=ac,hqdn3d=80:60:120 crf=32: bitrate 293.77 PSNR 39.463 in 72.171s crf=33: bitrate 262.38 PSNR 38.805 in 70.786s bitrate for 35.5 PSNR would be 148.74 So filtering helps encoding efficiency. But in the last case (-vf pp=ac,hqdn3d=80:60:120), the image is obviously very blurry, so the PSNR is really small. It certainly is not the 38.805 reported. This suggests that the reported PSNR is from comparing the *already filtered picture* with the *filtered, compressed picture*. For me it would be far more useful to compare the *original picture* with the *filtered, compressed picture*. So I cannot decide know how much (if any) filtering I should apply. What do you think? A or B? Also, I suggest the mencoder documentation to explicitly say, for the psnr option, what is compared with what. (1) The site http://www.normalesup.org/~george/comp/video_quality/ seems to confirm that, for a certain range of bitrates, the PSNR is indeed a linear function of log(bitrate).
