Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? B-frames and GOP with MPEG-2 for DVD

Can anyone offer any input to the following command line? I've been trying to refine for the highest possible quality of MPEG-2 while staying DVD compliant. The source is 24fps. (Note: format=mpeg2, because format=dvd does not work with Adobe Encore 2.0). From what I understand, keeping GOP open, improves quality. Is this true? Is it 100% DVD compliant? Do I want to introduce B frames in my encoding? (The vb_strategy part of my command line is currently useless, right?) If parts of my video are reaching into 9-10 Mbs bitrate, would it beneficial to introduce B-Frames? Will it improve quality? Noise reduction and interlacing: (hq)denoise3d vs. nr

What are the differences between denoise3d (or hqdn3d) and the nr lavc denoise filter? Beside that the latter is faster, are both equally appropriate for denoising interlaced content? I am asking this as it is perfectly possible to put hqdn3d between il=d:d and il=i:i (so this is interlaced-safe), but nr is a lavc option and it is not clear to me whether it does or does not harm interlaced content. When I run it again (with pass=2), only the first minute of the movie is processed (looks fine), and only the first part has sound: there is sound during ... heh, sorry, I am not native English... in the beginning you see those logo's of the movie makers, then there is sound. As soon as the movie starts, there is no sound anymore. Also, I get a warning somewhere (it is not printed above - I think I get it with pass=2) that it is encoding to AVI. How can I get it to use the same enconding that is in the original mkv? I thought avi doesn't have variable bitrate and stuff - only the new x264 supports that. Hmm, I now note that it prints some kind of error. Encoding with an EDL

Hi, I'm trying to encode 1 second of a movie every 20 seconds. This movie having a length of 8000 seconds, here a sample of the EDL file I've defined: 1 20 0 21 40 0 41 60 0 ... 7981 8000 I expect the result to have a length of roughly 400 seconds (5% of 8000 seconds). However, none of the tests I've made gave me that length. The result is either shorter when I use -hr-edl-seek (210 seconds) or much larger (4000 seconds) without -hr-edl-seek. What am I missing ? Scrubbable Mpeg-2

The Mpeg-2 files I'm creating with MEncoder are not scrubbable in most players other than mplayer (Quicktime, Media Player). Impossible to get (synchronized) sound with mencoder.

It seems that anything I try doesn't do anything about the core of the problem: that mencoder somehow thinks that there are a lot more audio packets per second than that there really are. If I use -of avi and re-encode the audio stream (with -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3) - I get a HUGE desync where the audio lags the video (I see video images and get the corresponding audio only seconds later - even just 1 minute into the movie). Using -of lavc -lavcopts format=mp4 in addition, results in no sound at all thus. Any attempt to get an audio sync results in it complaining about "too many packets in buffer". The only way I have been able to process (crop + rescal) the whole video so far is with -nosound. This seems to be a bug in mencoder. mencoder skips every 10 frames with "floating point exception"

Hey There, I have created a script that converts a video to make it suitable for iPod Video. The amazing thing is that the commented line: mencoder -sub lost13.srt -subcp iso8859-9 -subfont-encoding unicode -subfont-text-scale 4 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2500:vqmin=2:vqmax=10:acodec=aac:vglobal=1:aglobal=1:abitrate=128:aspect=4/3 -oac lavc -lavfopts format=mp4:i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames -vf scale=320:240,harddup -of lavf -info artist="Lost":name="Sezon 3 Bolum 13" -o lost13.mp4 lost13.avi works fine, but the line 1 line below doesn't work while it's the same line with just a few variables: mencoder -sub "$SUB" -subcp "$SUB_CP" -subfont-encoding unicode -subfont-text-scale "$SUB_SIZE" -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec="$VIDEO_CODEC":vbitrate="$VIDEO_BITRATE":vqmin=2:vqmax=10:acodec="$AUDIO_CODEC":vglobal=1:aglobal=1:abitrate="$AUDIO_BITRATE":aspect="$ASPECT_RATIO" -oac lavc -lavfopts format="$FORMAT":i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames -vf scale="$SIZE",harddup -of lavf -o "$OUTPUT_FILENAME" "$INPUT_FILENAME" So, if I type the whole command by my self in the command line, it converts any video without any problems. Starting reading a video from a point

Hi all, I'm actually writing a GUI for mencoder, and i have got a small problem. I want to divide the encoding process, so i started by using -ss and -endpos options.... The problem is that the start and stop are not really precise .... Then, I wanted to use frames to delimit my encoding ... so the option -frames permits to select a number of frames to encode, but is there an option that permits mencoder (or an mplayer option) to start reading from a precise frame ... or do i have to divide the video file first and then encode each part of the divided video ?
