Help with MPG video encoding

Hi, I've got a question on how to get the best possible MPG encoding of a movie source, "at any price" so to speak -- i.e., as many bits as the encoder needs to get the highest possible video quality. It appears to me that the MPG encoding process is introducing artifacts that are present regardless of the amount of "free reign" I give to the encoder with respect to quantization, bitrate, and the like. My bottom line question is thus: "Are these artifacts inherent in MPG encoding, or am I just not twiddling the knobs and dials on the encoder correctly?" Here's all the details ... My source is a mixed hard- and soft-telecined "movie" at 1080/60i that I'm trying to tanscode to 480/24p, soft telecined to 480/60i, for ultimate burning to an NTSC DVD-Video. When I use mencoder to inverse telecine, crop out the crud, expand back to the original letterbox ratio (it's 2.35:1, not 16/9), and 'encode' the video with HUFFYUV (422P), the resulting video looks stunning, with no 'blocking' artifacts to speak of. This, of course, is as expected. But when I encode the video in MPG2 or MPG4, even with vqscale=1 or vqscale=2, I see sometimes severe blocking in the resulting video. Is this because the chroma is being subsampled vertically and horizontally (4:2:0), or is it because 'vqscale' is (perhaps necessary but) not sufficient to get "maximum quality at any price" encoding? Hi, I am trying to convert a Matroska movie into avi, so my dvd player can handle it. This is the first time I am trying to convert a Matroska file. I do this call: mencoder tps.mkv -ovc copy -oac pcm -o tps.avi and I always get this error, no matter which option I am using to avoid this. Pos: 707.2s 19287f (13%) 2925.82fps Trem: 0min 1561mb A-V:0.020 [1022:1536] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 707.6s 19298f (13%) 2925.27fps Trem: 0min 1562mb A-V:0.023 [1022:1536] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 707.8s 19305f (13%) 2925.89fps Trem: 0min 1561mb A-V:0.013 [1022:1536] Too many audio packets in the buffer: (4096 in 601911 bytes). Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed? For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option. Does anyone has an idea what to do? Thanx Steffen

record from camera to quicktime-compatible format

Hi, I am using mencoder version 1.0pre8, and trying to record video and audio from a camera and microphone to a basic quicktime-compatible format. I would like to use mpeg4 video and the fastest possible audio encoder. The closest I've been able to get to something that works reliably is to record from the camera thusly: mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:normid=2:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/audio -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=200:vglobal=1:aglobal=1 -sws 0 -vf scale=320:240,mirror=on -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=aac:abitrate=16 -o test.avi -ffourcc XVID and then transcode it to a .mp4 (recording straight to a .mp4 has resulted in broken files): mencoder test.avi -ovc copy -oac copy -ffourcc mp4v -of lavf -lavfopts format=mp4:i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames -o test.mp4 However, the aac audio encoder is too slow, and I'd really like to skip the second step (although it is quite fast). I've looked at videos recorded from a little Canon Powershot camera. They are in .avi format, with uncompressed pcm audio, and they play fine in quicktime. However I can't get pcm audio to work at all in quicktime (even after the above transcode step), and I haven't figured out how to get .avi files to run as-is, even with no audio (I removed vglobal=1:aglobal=1 for .avi). Here is how I recorded to pcm audio: mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:normid=2:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/audio:audiorate=11024 -af channels=1 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=200:vglobal=1:aglobal=1 -sws 0 -vf scale=320:240,mirror=on -oac pcm -o test.avi -ffourcc XVID I've also tried a fourcc of mjpg, which is what the Canon uses. Any advice on how to get uncompressed pcm audio (or mp2 or ac3) to work with basic quicktime? That's the more important goal. A second step to transcode the audio to aac does work but it takes way too long. Also a one-step encode to either .avi or .mp4 is highly desireable. I have run mplayer with -msglevel all=9 to get as much info as I can on the videos. There are some differences between the Canon and the ones I recorded, I have not been able to get them to be identical. need help with .mpg format

Here's .mpg file as is: http://www.ibiblio.org/studioforrecording/media/banders.mpg When I type the address into firefox browser, on my PIII FC5 system, it loads and plays fine. However, I have reports that it doesn't open on a Mac system, or a Windows system. Here's the encoding commands I used: ]$ mencoder mf://*.jpg -mf w=320:h=240:fps=1/7:type=jpg -ovc copy -audiofile Open_Studios_theme_banders.ogg -oac pcm -o test1.avi followed by: ]$ mencoder test1.avi -o new5.mpg -ofps 25 -vf scale=320:240,harddup -of mpeg -mpegopts format=vcd -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp2:abitrate=224 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video:vrc_buf_size=327:keyint=15:vrc_maxrate=1152:vbitrate=1152:vmax_b_frames=0 Can anyone help me work out commands that would create a video that starts with images, and results in a video with sound track that works on most computers? Video and Audio async

Hi everybody, i'm a newbie to mencoder. I'm trying to encode uncompressed avi-files to an avi with xvid and mp3lame. mencoder input.avi -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts bitrate=300 - mc 0 -ofps 25 -o output.avi I already tested ffmpeg for encoding issues but i always have the same problem, also with mencoder. The length of the video and audio stream are not equal, for me its a big problem because i want to merge the videos with avimerge or mencoder. The async of the videos grows with the amount of videos i merge. Can somebody tell me why the audiostream gets shorter when encoding to xvid/mp3? Or is there an option to keep the a/v sync when i merge the videos together? I'm thankful for any suggestions. Kind regards, Tobias Brockamp

ivtc using mencoder

Hello all, I hope that the following is an easy task for some of you experts out there. Can someone help me get mencoder to perform a reverse pulldown on an mpeg2 transport stream? The footage was taken from a Canon HV20 in 24P but is stored using the HDV format (60i). Here is the sample raw capture: http://www.startsimple.com/hv20/24p000.m2t I was hoping my NLE would be able to do this (Cinelerra), but it appears that the Canon's mpeg stream is not properly flagged as Progressive (at least, this is what current owners are claiming) which may be the reason for the failed attempts. I'm guessing that mencoder has the capabilities to "force" an ivtc operation and save the day. Any ideas? I'm clueless when it comes to mencoder. Thanks!

WMV, problem with Windows Media Player

Hello everybody, I am trying to convert some flv files to wmv with codec wmv1/wmv2. I am using the following command: mencoder in.flv -o out.wmv -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2:acodec=mp3 -vf scale=320:240 When i try to open the video in Windows Media player, it appears a message telling me that the format of the file doesnt correspond to its extension. When i click ok to this message the video is played well anyway. In order to specify the format of video, I add the option -of lavf -i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames. When opening the resulting video WMP doesnt give me the message anymore but when playing the video in some points it gets stuck with one or more frames. The audio goes on well but some frames last for 6-7 seconds so that the video is totally bad. What do i do wrong in this command: mencoder in.flv -o out.wmv -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2:acodec=mp3 -of lavf -lavfopts i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames Why does video get stuck? How to convert avi to Playstation 3 compatible using x264

For a few days, i tried to convet some avi files to mp4 for PS3 using x264 under linux. However, i couldn't find the reference for PS3, there was one for PSP though. After encoding, mp4 files were not playable on PS3. PS3 says "Unsupported data". So, please anyone give me some tips and advices. Thank you,
