Cropping black edges
by Tomasz Ksiezyk 10 Feb '07

10 Feb '07

I got an AVI file which, when played, shows black bands at the edges. I can run the mplayer with the option: -vf crop=<crop-values> and everything is fine. However, I would like to remove the bands permanently. When I do it with something like: mencoder -oac copy -vf crop=<crop-values> -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=<bitrate> name-in.avi -o name-out.avi I get what I want, but I'm afraid, the video quality of the modified file is diminished by this processing. Of course, I could tweak the parameters better, but in the best case would only achieve the quality of the original. My question is then this: Can I crop the video leaving everything else unmodified, i.e. copy only a subregion of the video? If so, how could I do this? I tried: mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -vf crop=<crop-values> name-in.avi -o name-out.avi but this didn't work as I hoped for. Thanks, Tomasz Ksiezyk

H263 container broken?
by DD DD 10 Feb '07

10 Feb '07

I am trying to convert an FLV to H263+AMR, which can be streamed in darwin streaming server. I was able to do this fine. However, it seem to have broken in a newer version of ffmpeg. Upgrading the the latest version from trunk still has the same problem. The output file that ffmpeg creates has a wrong bps for the video, which results in a very poor quality file. This was fine with an older version (from august) of ffmpeg. <snip> Output #0, 3gp, to 'video.3gp': Stream #0.0: Video: h263 (hq), yuv420p, 176x144, q=2-31, 0 kb/s, 15.00fps(c) Stream #0.1: Audio: amr_nb, 8000 Hz, mono, 16 kb/s </snip> Any suggestions? Simple Mencoder call using Exec
by Nathan Wallis 09 Feb '07

09 Feb '07

Hi there, I am using mencoder for windows and having a little trouble with a call I am using to stitch a few jpgs together into an flv. I have it working from php using the exec ("start mencoder....... no problem..... The problem I do have is this....the jpgs i am encoding are not in the same folder as mencoder. The php file that is calling mencoder is and that executes with no problems, I am specifying a relative path to the folder that contains the JPG's from the mencoder folder and that works also, the windows CMD window appears and detects the right number of jpgs etc....it then begins encoding...but crashes with these being the last few lines Flushing video frames Filters have not been configured! Empty file? Writing index... Writing Header... KABOOM The PHP script works and encodes with no problems if the same JPG's that I am trying to encode from the folder outside of mencoder are also in the mencoder folder..... <?PHP echo "ENCODING\n"; exec ("start mencoder \"mf://../../*.jpg\" -ofps 25 -o ../test.flv -of lavf -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=flv:keyint=50:vbitrate=600:mbd=2:mv0:trell:v4mv:cbp:last_pred=3 -vop scale=320:240 -lavfopts i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames"); echo "\nDONE"; ?> Does anyone have any ideas on this, it does go to the relative folder and detects the number of JPG's there, but if they aren't in the same folder as mencoder then it crashes.... Thanks for your time, Nathan

muxing MPEG4 ASP into MP4 container with Mencoder ?
by Pierre Catello 09 Feb '07

09 Feb '07

>From what I have read, muxing H.264/AVC video into MP4 container with the lavc muxer of Mencoder does not support B-frames. Is it specific to H.264, or is there the same limitation when using MPEG4 simple profile encoding (I mean, can I produce valid .MP4 with MPEG4 asp + aac audio with Mencoder ?) TIA

easy way to display subtitles for scenes?
by Michael Weishaar 09 Feb '07

09 Feb '07

I have been using mencoder to transfer some of my DVDs to divx files. But for some movies, there are parts of the movie where they speak another language. When playing the DVD in a player, there are English subtitles displayed during those scenes. Is there an easy way to do this using mencoder? I am sure I could extract the subtitles and go through a complicated process to get it to work, but I'd love it if someone could tell me a simpler way. Here is the command I usually use: mencoder dvd://1 -af volnorm -srate 22050 -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128 -noodml -vf scale=360:240,eq2=1.0:1.0:0.03:1.0 -sws 9 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vmax_b_frames=0:vbitrate=863 -ffourcc DX50 -o outfile.avi I used to use dvdrip, but that process (using transcode) seemed to take a while and didn't work for some DVDs. Then I was just ripping it, and using mencoder directly on the vob. Then I found the above command, and have been VERY happy with it. -Michael

vp6 and decoding / resizing / thumbnail
by junk 08 Feb '07

08 Feb '07

i want to use mencoder on linux (fedora core 5) to take a vp6 encoded SWF video , and then generate a JPG from a frame as a thumbnail. i also want to create a "video thumbnail" where i cut the SWF video down to say 5 seconds and resize it. i'm aware that vp6 encoding is not supported by mencoder. but i'm wondering if the vp6 decoder can decode a SWF, i'd be happy to write a new SWF in a different codec like h264 . is this possible? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Audio sync issues
by Pierre Grimaud 07 Feb '07

07 Feb '07

I am trying to encode mkv videos (H264/AC3) to XviD AVI, trying to preserve the audio track. Whenever I put '-oac copy' in there I have a bunch of lines looking like that: Pos: 0.0s 3f ( 0%) 0.00fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.008 [0:0] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 0.2s 5f ( 0%) 0.00fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.017 [0:0] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 0.9s 22f ( 0%) 19.40fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.088 [0:128] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 1.4s 32f ( 0%) 19.56fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.088[1735:128] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 1.8s 42f ( 0%) 16.98fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.088[1884:128] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 2.2s 52f ( 0%) 15.01fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.088[2098:128] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 2.7s 62f ( 0%) 14.46fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.088[2200:128] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Pos: 3.1s 72f ( 0%) 14.04fps Trem: 0min 0mb A-V:-0.088[2433:128] 1 duplicate frame(s)! Which is of course bad (is it ?). When I play the file, usually the audio will get there for a few secs and then will get broken. I tried a '-mc 0' which does make this message disappear, but then I get the following after a few minutes of encoding: Pos: 196.4s 4710f ( 4%) 10.17fps Trem: 177min 1802mb A-V:0.000[3080:128] Too many audio packets in the buffer: (4097 in 6292992 bytes). Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed? For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option. I tried -noskip but the messages are still there (around one for each 10 frames)... "-vf harddup" also shows the same problem (on playback and encoding) If I specify "-oac mp3lame", everything works fine (a few duplicate frames at first and then everything settles down) but in the resulting video, the audio is out of sync. Anyways, I'd like to be able to keep the original soundtrack. Thanks for any help, much appreciated. -- pieroxy Note: I join one command-line and its output there: =============================== mencoder -o Microcosmos.avi -ovc xvid -oac copy /media/spare/Video/Microcosmos.mkv -xvidencopts bitrate=3000:me_quality=0:vhq=0 -ofps 24000/1001 MEncoder 2:0.99+1.0pre8-0ubuntu8 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team CPU: AMD Sempron(tm) 2500+ (Family: 6, Model: 8, Stepping: 1) CPUflags: Type: 6 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0 Compiled with runtime CPU detection. success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x16b85337 [mkv] Track ID 1: video (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC), -vid 0 [mkv] Track ID 2: audio (A_AC3), -aid 0, -alang eng [mkv] Will play video track 1 [mkv] Will play audio track 2 Matroska file format detected. Mencoder subtitle settings doesn't work when you try embedding subtitle in avi file
by Zoltan Szabo 06 Feb '07

06 Feb '07

Hi! Dear Developers! I'm using an i'mac with intel core2duo processor. I use the ffmpegX latest version (0.0.9 x r2) and ffmpegX binaries20060307.zip. I would like to embed srt subtitles in a AVI file, but the font, the font size and the font position doesn't work in the filters tab (can't change the values, only the deafult settings works). I red the forum that it is a mencoder bug. Can you solve this problem with a new repaired mencoder build? (I use the 0.0.9s version of mencoder it works well, but it support PPC processors, so it's not a unibin version and slow for me.) Thank's for the helping! Subtitle sync issues on 1.0_rc1
by Trejkaz 05 Feb '07

05 Feb '07

Hi all. I have a set of videos in Matroska containers with subtitles, and it seems like ever since 1.0_rc1 I haven't been able to successfully transcode these videos to xvid and maintain sync of the subtitles (audio and video are fine.) I'm using a script to keep it under control: # Disable LAME - crashes out with a floating point exception no matter what. #ENCOPTS="-oac mp3lame -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1" ENCOPTS="-oac pcm -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1" SUBOPTS="-sid 0 -font /usr/share/fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera/Vera.ttf -subfont-text-scale 3" mencoder ${ENCOPTS} ${SUBOPTS} "$1" -o "$1-converted.avi" The very same video works fine in mplayer itself, which is crazy -- I thought the two were based on the same code so it's a little confusing as to how one would work properly and the other would be out of sync. Versions before 1.0_rc1 used to work... or at least I can't remember it causing issues before I upgraded. In case it makes a difference, this is under Gentoo. And no, I don't use crazy CFLAGS. ;-) TX -- Email: trejkaz(a)trypticon.org Jabber ID: trejkaz(a)trypticon.org Web site: http://trypticon.org/ GPG Fingerprint: 9EEB 97D7 8F7B 7977 F39F A62C B8C7 BC8B 037E EA73
